Claudio Branch
I know that using an FG map is effective for reducing GI flicker in animations, but apparently it improves render times as well? I recently did an animation using only Final Gather and prior to utilizing the map I had render times at 15:00 (800x600 w/ AA settings 4, 16). There was some flickering going on so I saved off my FG map with these settings: (320x240 w/ AA settings 1/64, 1/64). The FG map build was very fast for a 900 (30 sec) sequence. I resubmitted the frames with the original settings and the render times are now averaging at 3:30 (almost 5X faster). Anybody else had similiar results? Justin Hunt
Absolutly, in fact it is the prefered way to render an animation and especially so with large renders. To squeeze a bit more time out of the FG calculations and save some memory, turn off "view FG calculation" under the mentalray tab in preferences. Claudio Branch
I read a post on this topic some time ago, but cannot seem to find it now. The sequence of frames I did do not flicker, but have some splotchiness in areas you would not expect to see it, like in the center of a face with no corners nearby. Anybody remember that original thread? I may be missing something...
