FG Map & Rendering Time

I know that using an FG map is effective for reducing GI flicker in animations, but apparently it improves render times as well?

I recently did an animation using only Final Gather and prior to utilizing the map I had render times at 15:00 (800x600 w/ AA settings 4, 16).

There was some flickering going on so I saved off my FG map with these settings: (320x240 w/ AA settings 1/64, 1/64). The FG map build was very fast for a 900 (30 sec) sequence.

I resubmitted the frames with the original settings and the render times are now averaging at 3:30 (almost 5X faster).

Anybody else had similiar results?

Absolutly, in fact it is the prefered way to render an animation and especially so with large renders.

To squeeze a bit more time out of the FG calculations and save some memory, turn off "view FG calculation" under the mentalray tab in preferences.

Also, don't forget to set the FG map to "Read Only" (in the render dialog) for the actual render of the animation!!
