memory problem

i think i have a memory problem. i just bought new components for a new machine. installed everything and then attempted to install winxp. many problems during installation (blue screens galore) - so as a trouble shooting measure i removed one of my two crucial 1g memory chips.... installation went like cake. after installation and about an hour of putzing around installing stuff, i decided to put the second chip back in. 5 minutes later the machine freezes. i took the chip out, and replaced the other chip (that seamed to be working fine) with it.... machine runs smoothly overnight. tonight i put the second chip back in (the one that had been in the first slot) and the machine resets after 10 minutes.

 

the issue seams to be with the slot, not the chip - no?

 

The board is an asus P5NE - SLI with memory slots labeled A1, A2, B1, B2. I had the memory in slots A1 and B1 because the manual says that A1+A2 must equal B1+B2 (this is a quad core 6600 system).

 

anyway, im going to try some other things - but does anyone have any suggestions or do i have a bad motherboard? - i have reseated the memry chip at least four times.

Ah, another crash, and i noticed the flash of a blue screen before it reset. i am trying the memory in slots A2 and B2 instead of A1 and B1. we will see what happens. although that seams to screw me when i want to upgrade to winxp64 and 4g of ram.

What a headache...I delt with memory problems on a lower end PC for my kids...blue screens like crazy, but a couple new chips fixed it, yours sounds a little more involved.

its an asus motherboard, its crucial ram (ddr 800), bought it from NewEgg. i put the two chips in slots a2 and b2 (instead of a1 and b1) right after posting this and everything is working great. its got to be a MB slot problem. i guess ill call newegg.

 

what a royal pain in the ass this is going to be to un and re install this freaking motherboard.
