Chris Potts
Have you been try out on IPod Itouch? like this http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/ Yes, I did went to Apple Store yesterday to try out Itouch demo last few mins before that shop close hour time. I've been play around on Itouch with picture, music, Youtube, Wifi Webstie etc... That is very impressive me. Also I did been try type up http://www.cgarchitect.co.uk on Safari (WiFi internet) for a laugh. Hey presto, it showed up front webpage, It did working perfectly and also can expand zoom in close up font size on your finger tip to see forum message very clearly. It working brillant- I love it. It free wifi - No pay contract needed. Wicked cool. Only small weak one is website can be sometime slow load up. You have to patince waiting load up depend on distance to Wifi point. But most overall point is brillant I think. Now Im thinking put on my christmas wish list lol. Im not sure It can allow any download any from Safari Wifi website for example image picture or PDF etc. or Is must Music Mp3 download only. I will try back to Apple store ask more question on Itouch next time. Also try test post message on CGArchitect forum, if it working. What your view of point on Ipod Itouch ? Brillant or Crap ? AJLynn
I've had one for weeks. They're awesome. The web browser is actually pretty speedy, not as good as a new desktop, but far better than any other mobie device I've tried. To address your questions, you can't download using Safari - it can display PDF and whatever but doesn't have anything to save and read files. It doesn't download music, except music you get at the mini iTunes store. But my only complaints are that it lacks some functions that would make it a PDA - entering events into the calendar, typing or viewing documents (except documents exported to a sequence of images using the photo browser) and no native email program - so I guess that either Apple's agreement with AT&T prevents their releasing something like that, or they plan to release a true PDA soon. Chris Potts
To address your questions, you can't download using Safari Oh darn I wish, Anyway Itouch still good. Other question. Does it still can work recevied and send out e-mail on Hotmail ?. I mean without save into Itouch hard drive, Just look read that all. so I guess that either Apple's agreement with AT&T prevents their releasing something like that, or they plan to release a true PDA soon. Yeah I hope so. More new techology gadget in near future. Also There have other new gadget called UMPC (Utlra Mobile PC). But it really too expensive and not arrive UK yet. I have seen it over New York last year. I like it but UMPC is bit too big carry in pocket.
AJLynn
Yeah, actually if you go to mobile.msn.com on any mobile device you'll get a version of MSN with Hotmail formatted for small screens. I've been finding all kinds of web apps and sites formatted for the touch and iPhone - mobile instant messenger, Google everything, Wikipedia, games, etc. The browser is also fine with normal formatted sites, but I like mobile versions when I can find them. I don't think anybody quite knows exactly what Apple is planning as far as an ultramobile, but it seems like that will be more of a Macbook alternative than a PDA. Look for some new Apple hardware at the same time as Leopard releases, hopefully around October 26. Rumors are the Mac Mini gets replaced by a new model called the Mac Nano, and the Mac Pro should get an update - word on the street is Apple has tied up nearly the entire supply of 3.2GHz quad Xeons for the first couple of months they're available. AJLynn
The screen problem is the now infamous "week 37" bug. The number of the week of manufacture is in the serial number, and most of the week 37 screens have this problem. Some people report that the new firmware actually fixes this, but I originally had a 37 and it was so bad I returned it and now have a 38, which is much better. I was really disappointed in the video at first until I found out it was a known bug - I though Apple had just saved money by buying crappy screens. I was also disappointed that they had no cases available at launch, but I had a workaround, an old iPod sleeve that's the right size. The rest of the criticisms - I do wish it had those iPhone apps. I figure eventually I'll be able to hack it and get freeware versions of some of them on there, but not having a real email program is annoying. For now all of those things can be found in web sites and Safari web-based apps. The Safari implementation is actually really good, handles most non-Flash web sites very well and has tabs. Not having Edge networking isn't a bug, it's a feature. You don't need AT&T wireless. I have Verizon and I wouldn't want to switch. I think the guy who wrote that iprong article has some gaps in his iPod knowledge. The "dock" he describes is actually a universal insert for iPod docking devices like speakers. It's not a standalone part. It lets you use all iPods with all accessories that have that type of slot. And of course it doesn't have Bluetooth or speakers. It's an iPod. AJLynn
iPod touch and iPhone 1.1.1 jailbreak was just announced ast night. I did it today. Complicated procedure. Some UNIX required. But it gives you root access, a terminal, ability to SSH in and use SFTP to transfer files. Once you have that, you can copy an app finder/downlaoder/installer to it, SSH in and run that then use its interface on the iPod to install a program that adds installed app icons to the home screen. With those two parts, you get access to a ton of 3rd party apps. A bit more hacking and it's running email, games, a notepad, an ebook/document reader and some other things - it's a PDA now. But anybody who's not comfortable in UNIX and willing to hack should wait a while for a simpler toll set.

AJLynn
Just for ebooks? Sony's got one. Also, there's a new HP ipaq coming out with a 640x480 screen and Windows Mobile has an ebook reader.
rpompeu
Just for ebooks? Sony's got one. Also, there's a new HP ipaq coming out with a 640x480 screen and Windows Mobile has an ebook reader. 640x480? hey, that is nice, but I'll keep on my nokia n800 that is 800x480. Besides it runs an OS based on linux and there are tons of software avaiable for it and anyone can make more programs for it. I bought a cheap bluetooth GPS receiver and a car holder and it works fine on my car also as media center. It has two slots for memory cards, now I'm using just one SDHC 16GB. Chris Potts: Monthly fees? I think you've seen another device since it's not a phone, but an internet tablet (as they say, I'd like to call this as a PDA). You can connect to the internet in any open wifi or by your phone via bluetooth. since texts are very little in size, it's very cheap to send by any cell phone plan you have.
