carlangas
Hi all, I just got a new pc its a quad core Q6600. its running vista 32 now but I will install xp 64bit. it currenty has two 1gb sticks and want to bring that up to 6gb total. so the question is if this memory I selected http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820178163 will work with what I currently have installed?. any help would be appreciated as I dont know a whole lot about this. I also attached my current memory specs. thanks
carlangas
Hi Nes, The motherboard brand is acer... I have four slots total. I want to populate my two remaining slots with 2gbs each. the other two already have 1gb each. so would this cofiguration not work?
AJLynn
That's not necessarily correct, but with an Acer computer... you'll need to check the docs for the system, cause who knows what the heck they put in there. Many motherboards will support 2x1GB + 2x2GB so long as you pair them correctly.
andreg
just a comment on this one... why up to 6Gb when a 32bit system can only see 2gb (3gb with the switch)? Or can vista 32bit use more ram?
AJLynn
He's going to go to XP64.
carlangas
thanks all for your responses. heres the tab for my motherboard. I tried getting info on it but couldnt find anything. ok, so assuming all the memory sticks are the same kind, are the memory sticks I picked from newegg a good choice or not? AJLynn
It's hard to believe to those people who really good in talking or typing an answer but knowing nothing. I tell you what... why don't you buy 2x-2gb and put it in your PC. Let us know what will happen. Tell us also if your PC can read a 6gb memory stick. Anyway after a 10 long yrs experience in PC my comments is just only a suggestion. If you don't want my suggestion it's up to you. What I object to is you making statements in terms that suggest absolute conviction, when you may be wrong. Telling a guy he can't combine 2GB and 1GB DIMMs when you don't know what his MB is, telling another guy he needs SLI to drop his render times - that kind of thing isn't helpful and with your vast knowledge you should know that. shaneis
Have a look at this one then, make sure you read it carefully... http://www.tyan.com/product_board_detail.aspx?pid=
AJLynn
Damn that's a lot of memory slots.
shaneis
I know, it's almost pornographic Tyan predominantly build servers, but their workstation bits look pretty tatsy as well. Have a look at their resellers near you for the TYAN PSC (personal super computer)...again - hardware porn!

AJLynn
Try the installer without the new 4gb?
carlangas
Try the installer without the new 4gb? I did but it didnt work. ive been doing some reading and it looks like I need to provide the harddrive driver files when the windows setup is running but the thing is that it prompts me for the files and this pc came with no floppy drive. ive tried the usb ports and the flash card reader but it will not read those. how can I get arround this without buying a new floppy drive? AJLynn
Oh, it's that problem. I'd recommend cannibalizing an old computer for its floppy drive - that's what I do. Then do the F6 thing.
shaneis
Floppy is the only way it will work. Unfortunately XP64 won't allow you to properly install the drivers from anything other than a floppy drive. You can't use a USB floppy drive either, it must be wired to the board. carlangas
darn.... I have an old computer and tried to use its floppy drive but that floppy uses one of those old wide ribbon cables. im just going to have to get a new one which annoys me because im going to have to pay something like 40 bucks for it.... thanks for the help guys
shaneis
You might be able to buy an adapter to allow you to plug the floppy into a ribbon - so long as your mobo can accept it - might be cheaper?
