Chad Warner
Client requested light sculpture. I don't even know where to begin, so any help is appreciated. I use 3ds Max for modeling. Thanks, Chad
pipjor
chad, maybe pflow would work.. create 2-3 squiggley geom, attach to object various rotions, scales etc..??
MannyG
hhmm...maybe with splines? make a few diff ones, few curly ones and copy them until it looks like your pic...its a start.
CHE
That would be pretty easy to model in Modo with SubD's and the Mesh Paint tool.
caffa
You could do it with Poolyboost plugins, it has the PolyBranch tool that would do the trick, check this video: http://www.cmlcreative.com/Videos/PolyBoost2_1_video.avi Other way, would be doing many many lofts, twisting the paths and with some noise perhaps. And of course the pflow option that David sugested would do it too. Best luck.
Chad Warner
chad, maybe pflow would work.. create 2-3 squiggley geom, attach to object various rotions, scales etc..?? I tried using the P-Array object and was able to get the squiggly things randomly applied and scaled, but I can't figure out how to get the pivot point to stay aligned to the emitter object. Any advice?
Tamir
All you need is lot's of time and patience.
a_w
Seems like the Scatter compound object would work. Maybe scatter a few unique, tapered splines on the edge midpoints of a sphere. Adjust the scaling and translation on face parameters so some splines appear shorter than others. Then instance the whole object 2-3 times, move each instance above the other, rotate and scale to get rid of any repetitive patterns.

Ernest Burden III
Animation or still? If a still, maybe you don't need to model it but instead Photoshop it in. C4D may have some tools that could do something like that. The tentacles are not all the same, but it would probably be OK to pretend they all follow the same rule. Later today when I'm in C4D I'll push a few buttons and see if I find anything useful for you.
Chad Warner
It's a couple of stills, but the viewpoint of the picture is the extreme opposite of the views that I will be shooting. The picture is of a chandelier and the intended purpose is of a statue. I'm going to be giving it a shot my self here in the next few hours, but I'll be happy to see what you can come up with. BrianKitts
heres how I would tackle it.... 1. create a helix spline 2. loft a circle along the spline 3. use the loft deformations to scale the circle along the spline 4. create a geosphere and scale it vertically 5. grab the loft and apply a scatter modifier 6. select the geosphere as the disturbution object 7. play with all the scatter variables for scale, rotation, and count 8. apply a glassy material, depending on your render engine you could probably use a noise map to mix in some light emmiters to your material. I built this in about 5 mins, but I think with some more tweaking you could get it a closer to your reference picture, but I think you can get the gist of what I started. good luck to ya! Chad Warner
Brian- That's pretty much the technique I'm using. I'm going to make a couple of different lofts and scatter them on the same object. I'm very scared of the lighting part of it though. Lots and lots of bounced reflections and refractions. Chad Warner
Here's what I've got. Instead of using the Max scatter, I used this plugin: http://www.maxplugins.de/r9_files/watje/scatterV9.zip Which allows me to pick multiple scatter objects, and then makes the scattered objects their own entity. It also allows the scattering of vray proxies.

Chad Warner
Here's the semi-finished product. I rendered it by itself and comped in photoshop, so there's still some work to be done.

Chad Warner
I forgot to thank everyone for their help. It was one of those things that looks impossible to create, but with the right push, it actually worked out to be pretty easy to create.
