christr
Hi! I'm having a problem exporting and importing files from autocad to 3ds max. The file imports fine, but the spline that looked nice and smooth in autocad turns out jagged in 3ds max. Also, some of the points seem to be out of place compared to autocad. I turn on smooth when importing, but that doesn't help anything. What am I doing wrong?

christr
Just tried it, but the line is the same... Should I change some of the settings in the import dialog? Could it be that the dwg file is a spline or polyline? Or should I convert it to something else in Autocad?
Stephen Thomas
In the Geometry part of the import options you can change the 'curve steps' to a higher value which will give your curve more facets, but there is no way to import a polyline with curved parts and keep the true curve as far as I know. Tella
Move the drawing to 0,0,0 coordinates before exporting. It makes it more precise.
christr
Thank you so much! That actually helped! Weird thing that it made such a big difference moving the polyline! Been messing around for 9 hours straight now, so I was about to give up... Thanks again!
dhar
try also to change the settings of ISOLINES in CAD drawing, d standard is 4, change it to 10....
prossarq
Well I have this problem and I have not idea what can I do. The polylines in AutoCAD are fine, but in Max they are not. I have read here that there is not much to do. That is true?
mikedeerf
That looks a LOT like what happens with the "Import AutoCAD drawing command." (Instead of "LEGACY" AutoCAD mentioned above). Are you working near 0,0, and using the "legacy" import and still getting that problem?
Brian Smith
all this and more is covered in the week 1's Insider article if you're interested in finding out more. http://www.cgarchitect.com/upclose/VI/default.asp

RAYMOND
just curious are you using importing meaning linking there are some settings in linking that solve this also... r:confused:
tiago
I'm having a similar problem but with cylinders (pillars) created in AutoCAD. They look smooth in Autocad but when they get imported to 3ds Max they are full of facets. I've had this problem before with other curved surfaces created in CAD when importing to MAX and never really been able to solve it and I haven't had much luck on google either. Stan Zaslavsky
Hi Tiago, you could avoid this problem by modelling the cylinders in Max and just using AutoCAD for the initial locations of the circles that make up the cylinders. Then when you extrude them in Max - you can specify the number of subdivisions to make them look smooth in Max hope it helps
s_tether
I too have the same problem so redraw over the polyline in MAX. For cylinders etc I just add a smooth modifier and it sorts it out. Cheers Si
raymarcher
Is it still needed to import with legacy instead of standard dwg with 3ds max 2011?
fourthand11
When I have this kind of problem creating curved polylines in AutoCAD I change the SURFTAB1 and SURFTAB2 parameters to something larger than the default (6) to something like (32). Usually fixes the problem. Only thing is that you have to rebuild the polyline after changing the parameters, AutoCAD does not update the polyline for you. -Dave
ankthelover
just copy ur autocad file into new cad file..... save it & then import it into 3d max...... ur problem will solve.... Ankur
