AFK_Matrix
Ok I have created a Stacked wall for an external wall which has a retaining wall at the bottom and then a normal wall above it. The problem is that when I create the floors and it asks me if i would like to cut the wall as it is overlapping the wall (so in section it looks like the floor is resting on the wall) and I say yes but it won't cut out the section from the Stacked wall? I have tried to do 2 seperate walls and it works here but then I have problems with the Room command as it won't recognise the rooms where the retaining wall is on the bottom. jonrempel
I use the JOIN GEOMETRY tool to join the floor to the wall. This cleans up the overlapping linework in the wall. When you switch to a 3D view and you place your mouse over the wall, you will also notice the the inner profile of the wall changes, showing the cutout for the floor. I have not run into any trouble with rooms in my work and also just playing with Revit to get the error in the room that you mentioned. I hope this helps. AFK_Matrix
Thanks that worked perfectly!! One more thing, what would be the best way of putting in Window Headers? At the moment I am altering the Wall profile and putting a rectangular hole above the windows and then just putting in the headers. I did try making a family for the Headers using the Void and Solid forms but when I bought in the family to my model the headers didn't cut a hole out of the wall. So what I need to do is have the family cut out a 103mm deep hole in the wall for the header, how do I do this?
jonrempel
I think that you are on the right track in creating your header family, using a void to create a cutout in the wall. Use the same JOIN GEOMETRY tool to join the header to the wall and your wall linework will clean up. I have attached a quick sample...it would be nice to be able to upload small Revit files. AFK_Matrix
Ok. But when I am trying to create a new family for headers I am running into some problems. What I do first of all is put some reference lines in to mark where the header is to go on the placement side of the wall. I then draw in a rectangle Void Form that is set back into the wall by 103mm and then I put in a solid form of a brick size and then copied this to create the Header and so that you can see the Header lines in Elevation. But when i go and look in 3d it hasn't cut the hole in the wall and if i then save that family and load it into my project it does not create the hole or bring in the header. My other problem is how to create a family of Soldier Headers and have different sizes of headers. If I create a brick size solid form and then copy that to get the header and then go to resize the header it mucks up the brick positions. The other thing I thought of doing is to make a solid form the size of the whole header and then use symbolic lines for the elevation lines but I can not get it so that when I resize the header they move with the header etc. Hope that makes sense if not i can attach the revit file and then zip it. jonrempel
I think you will have to attach a zip file.
jonrempel
I have attached a sample header family to see if I am understanding your question. There is no void in the wall at this point, just the header. In the family type editor, you can add a new size. The parameters are set for an IXL brick size of 90x40x292, but these are parameters that you can change. This family will add a new brick and a new grout joint automatically. If this is helpful, I will add the void and hopefully help you out. Jon Rempel
AFK_Matrix
Thanks for that file that is kind of what I am after yes. I have attached an image of the Elevation I am trying to recreate in revit. Basically I only need to show lines for the morter but your way is fine. One thing though when I made your headers smaller they had some problems. For example the 2 window sizes you see there means I need these 2 header types in the one family: 1st Type: Height = 1342, Width = 103, Depth = 225 2nd Type: Height = 915, Width = 103, Depth = 225 When I do the 2nd type's dimensions it doesn't seem to change the brick size and thus I think it mucks it up. Just so i know how you created this header, I assume all you did was create the mortar and brick shapes (using solid form??) and then used the array tool. And then constrained them with dimensions? Thanks for all your help I have just started using Revit and there is still so much to learn.
jonrempel
This sample was quickly set up using a smaller brick size so to make your size work, I would just delete the all the bricks except the first one on the left, change the parameters, and array the bricks again. If you don't need the mortar joint, just array your bricks without a space in between. To set the number of bricks parameter, I click on the number that shows up on a dimension line when you click on the arrayed objects. You can then add a number of bricks parameter and a formula to give you the appropriate number of bricks for the length of your header. You could get the same results with a single solid header with a vertical line pattern in model view. You would just have to align the hatch pattern with the edge of the header in an elevation view. I think that you can duplicate an existing hatch pattern and specify the line spacing. That is the easiest way to achieve the look that you want. If you are rendering the image, you could assign a brick soldier course material. Jon Rempel
Ron Schatz ASAI
A Revit newbe ? Why not have the masonry details be an add-on to the window or door objects? So that you can if you place a window in a masonry wall it will ask what type header, limestone, brick with keystone, jackarch ... etc. as well sill and styles. Different Masonry walls have different details for the same window or door, Window A place in Wall B uses detail options AB, window A place in wall BBS uses detail options ABBS, so if you change window A the detail options would update were applicable, right? Just a thought from outside the regular user, I am to new to this software, but have years of others.
