Devin Johnston
I'm using a Vray Sky, Sun and Physical Camera, what's the best way to place an image in the background; I don't want to do it in PhotoShop.
dagor
add plane with images. increase output of image in 100-300 time. or put image in enviroment slot. increase output in 100-300 time. if you work with piscam you need increase brightnes of image, or it renders dark. kippu
you can put it in the environment slot and increase the output value of the bitmap ...at default value of 1.0 ..the .jpg will render dark due to the physical cam
Stephen Thomas
If you're applying an image to a background plane/cylinder/dome I find the best way is to use a vray light material. That way it is unaffected by the GI and you can easily alter the brightness in the material editor if you need to.
Devin Johnston
I've got Vray Sky in my environment slot already; won't it change the lighting if I remove it?
dagor
put your sky in vray enviroment GI override slot and put image in max enviroment. you`ll have image in background and GI skylight. PS. output properties is in max bitmap setting.
Stephen Thomas
I've got Vray Sky in my environment slot already; won't it change the lighting if I remove it? You don't need to remove it, if you just want to have a background image show up under your render then you can use the load background option in your viewport menu. Or if you want more control over the positioning, then apply the image to a plane/cylinder/dome which gives you the option to move it around. Just watch your uv mapping isn't stretching the image. This is definitely the best way as everything gets antialiased properly unlike using alphas in PS, where you can get left with a white fringe making your background look unrealistic. Obviously try and match your image to the time of day and sun position you have set up in your vray sun/sky or daylight system. P.S. don't forget to uncheck cast and recieve shadows on your object settings!
ipxstudios
just use photoshop - then you can move the image around to the way you like rather than re-rendering.
BrianKitts
wow.... definately many ways to skin a cat.... here's my way which I find the easiest since you don't need post process, and you don't have to guess how high to raise the output level on your bitmap. only drawback is you can't count on a reflection of the background map..... place the vraysky in the environmental override as mentioned. place your new background bitmap in the max environment slot. And then in your color mapping untick the "affect background" checkbox. like I said this is the easiest, but there is one downfall, your reflected image will be dark....for instance if you are doing a generic mirror ball which we all love to play with when starting out with the physical camera, then the reflection does render black. Most the time I use a background rig with a dome, and assign a vraymaterial to the dome object, and exclude it from the GI, rather than using the enviro channel. while we are on backgrounds with vray I highly recommend checking this out....Lately I've been using a setup that was given out over on chao's forums, a guy setup a dome with a cloudmap in conjunction with a vray sky. It filters out the blue from the domemap and allows the clouds to show through ontop of the vraysky for the color change dictated by the vraysun position.....it's pretty slick.... http://www.chaosgroup.com/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=20507
