Tony
I contactesd a dealer for a price for viz 4 and asked if the product will be around in the future. Here is what was said about viz from an autodesk rep. -----Original Message----- From: Jeff Frank [mailto:jeff.frank@autodesk.com] Sent: Wednesday, August 27, 2003 11:38 AM To: Arlene Padamada Subject: RE: VIZ 4 "Yes, this will always be maintained as a separate product. They will still continue to come with new features along with 3dMax". This pretty much confirms that viz will be around in the future and continue to be upgraded. The dealer here in Houston quoted me a price of $1895.00. Can anyone suggest a better price somewhere? Tony
Ernest Burden III
Considering that what he says is the opposite of what I've been told by another ADSK dealer, I would think twice before rushing off to buy VIZ4. Notice his email address? Many of us have learned to be wary of anything anyone from Autodesk says.
Kerry Thompson
Hi Something I picked up in the AutoDesk Viz Newsgroup Hot off the presses - this is what can be officially said on this topic right now: Discreet and Autodesk are currently working on a successor solution to VIZ 4 that will combine the best of both VIZ and 3ds max technology for shipment later in 2003. This solution will also be fully compatible with ADT 2004 and the AutoCAD 2004 family of products, and will provide a new level of visualization capabilities. Attractive migration options for existing VIZ customers will be announced closer to the time of release. I hope this helps some. -- Rod Recker Software Development Manager Autodesk VIZ discreet, a division of Autodesk, Inc. Kerry
Sawyer
Actually that quote about: Discreet and Autodesk are currently working on a successor solution to VIZ 4 that will combine the best of both VIZ and 3ds max technology Seems like they could just be talking about max 6? Jeff Mottle
I don't think that news is so "hot". Rod posted that message some time ago and nothing about it to me suggests that there will be a VIZ 5. To me it says there will be a "solution". Whether that means VIZ 5 or an upgrade path, has yet to be officially announced. Anything else is pure speculation. As for that reseller....I would trust what you hear on a forum before I trusted what my reseller told me. There are so few that actually have any clue what is going on, other that what Autodesk spoon feeds them. Well that has been my experience. I've quized many on topics I did know the answer to and they were about 6-12 months behind what is really going on.
Munz
All this Viz, is it staying or going away, gossip is pretty unsettling. I am going to have to recommend a 3d package to my firm in the next couple of months, and orginally I was planning on getting Viz. Now with all this nonsense, I am concidering max for the fact that it ain't going away. On the other hand and off the topic, I would us Maya in a heart beat if it encorporated more architectural features. (basicly by autodesk avoiding the question they are lossing customers)...my two cents
Tony
I am very confused as to why autodesk is taking this kind of stance with a well known product like viz. I'm not interested at all in purchasing an additional seat with MAX 6 so viz is my only other choice, I want to use vray and the renderer that comes with MAX 6 is useless to me. Hopefully within the next month or so they will let their customers know something. If we can believe them when they do. Tony
Eric
"attractive migration options"?? Sounds like an alternative to VIZ (MAX6), rather than an upgrade to VIZ. Otherwise, they should have said attractive upgrade options.

Kerry Thompson
More scuttlebug re Viz: Autodesk has incorporated portions of Autodesk VIZ into Architectural Desktop 2004, and in October will be releasing a version of MAX with VIZ features. The new version of MAX will also have features that make it more compatible AutoCAD as well.
stefkeB
I doubt if there will be a new version... We upgraded to ADT2004 with the new VIZ-Render, but it is very limited (no modelling, almost no animation, only one material-type and just a very small set of procedurals). Maybe it is cool to teach our students, but I hate it. Max6 looks very cool, with Mental Ray included. And with support for DRF (the format from VIZ-Render), DWG2004 and ALL the VIZ4-features included, it seems that VIZ has nothing left anymore... I'll choose Max6 (but being in academic world means that it costs less).
