solidworm
Hi guys, I'll be building a rig for arch viz projects. I have a couple of questions in mind before i can totally decide on what to buy. Here is goes... 1. Winxp 32bit can only read up to 2gig ram? is this a fact? (im planning to go up to 4gig, im using WinXP sp2 32bit.) 2. For 3dsmax9, is the revised 8800gts640 better than 8800gt? Thanks.
shaneis
1. Winxp 32bit can only read up to 2gig ram? is this a fact? (im planning to go up to 4gig, im using WinXP sp2 32bit.) It can go to 3GB with the 3GB switch, but that's the limit. 2. For 3dsmax9, is the revised 8800gts640 better than 8800gt? The GT seems to be satisfying everyone at the moment. AJLynn
The GT is probably going to be better for you - in the reviews I saw it beat the GTS in every test. While using less power. The memory thing is complicated. It can use 4GB. The 2GB/3GB thing has to do with how much memory can be allocated to a process. Using the /3GB switch will allow 3GB to user apps and 1GB system reserved as opposed to 2/2. It can cause instability but most people don't have problems. But there's also this issue of overlap of the video card and system memory maps that will keep you from using the entire 4GB.
solidworm
1. so is it practical to put (4) 1 gig sticks on my MOBO? 2. yep i had read the reviews between 8800gts640 and 8800gt. thanks.
AJLynn
Sure, go with 4GB. It's cheap. I'm using 4 on XP32 at work and it's fine, even though it would be somewhat more efficient if I had XP64.
