Ready to give 2008 the boot...

Is there a clean-up utility of some sort to figure this out?

I've come across numerous (about 25% of those I've tested thus far) files created in Max 9 (32-bit) that simply won't open in Max 2008 (32), they just hang on and empty screen at the "Loading" prompt. Only way out is to Cntrl-Alt-Del.

I uninstalled everything Max / VRay (1.50 SP1). Ran CCleaner. Reinstalled.

I merged the model / lights / cameras from the 9 file into a new 2008 file. Retextured everything. Saved it. Closed it. Won't open.

Assuming possible camera / light complications, I tried a new 2008 file, new DWG file link. Retextured, all new lights and cameras. Renders fine. Saved it. Closed it. Won't open. (Interestingly though, the new file created this way on a 64-bit machine / 64-bit version opens fine on the 32-bit system. Yet a file that won't open on the 32-bit system ALSO won't open on the 64-bit system).

Still testing, but has been pretty unreliable thus far...

Anyone else having these issues?

Quite the opposite in fact. Everything I have tested has worked. Max9 file with dwg's file linked in, works even keep materials.

There have been a few improvments in the Arch and Design materials so I have had to go through and change a few settings. Files that struggled under Max9 now fly. I am now able to handle 4 to 6 times more complex scenes with out hassle. There have been no hardware or system changes.

I feel your pain, I went through it when we migrated from max8 to 9. 9 was problable the worst upgrade I have dealt with.

There are many possiblities that could be causing issues so I would soggest getting hold of Adesk support and try an work it through with them. They helped me heaps with my issues with Max9

Plug away and I am sure you will get to the bottom of this

Thanks for the reply Justin, I'm glad to hear it's working well for you. That helps me determine that it's something in those particular files perhaps. I will give AD a call today before pulling the plug, so to speak, and see what magic they can unveil.

9 was pretty painless for us here. What do you know...

hmmm. a friend of mine upgraded to max9 from max 5 and some scenes loaded in 9, yet when saved from 9 they wouldn't open again (for no obvious reason). Solution: he just copied the files to another directory and the miraculously opened. Just a thing to try...
