V-ray material question

Regarding VRayMtl, I found the strategy to set up the material is very different with the way 3DMAX does. In 3dmax, we need to assign a map to each materila slot like putting Raytrace map into Reflection slot. In VRay, there is no raytrace selection. I guess the VRay uses raytrace all the time so they don't need to mention it.

Do I understand this issue right?

smr, with vray material you use vraymap into reflection slot. luck!!

Incorrect...you would use the vraymap in the reflection slot of a standard Max material...never in a vraymaterial...

In a vraymaterial the reflection is controlled by the color swatch next to reflection (black means no reflections and white would be mirror reflections)...you can also put a bitmap texture in the box next to the color swatch to alter the behavior of the reflections...

Then what algorithem under the reflection? It should be raytrace.

iN the Reflection area, there is a Fresnel choice. This is sth like using falloff map combined with other maps in traditional 3dmax. Am I right?

Hmmm...maybe I didn't explain that very well...in the vray material the reflection is always on...but set to zero (black), if you want to increase the refections, change the color more towards "white"

If you want to change the way something reflects...like a Christmas ornament for example, where its got a design on a mirror surface, then you would but a bitmap of the design in the box where the arrow is pointing...hope that helps...
