solidworm
which of the two would perform better in modeling, rendering workstation? Quadro FX 3400 or GeForce 8800GTX?
F J
depends if the modeling/rendering software supports OpenGL or DirectX..
DavidR
The FX3400 is a really old card (3 yrs+); if you don't need ogl (eg: Max works better with DX), you'llm probably be happier with a 8800GT, or GTX if you feel the small edge is worth the huge $ diff. Dave Buchhofer
Go with the 8800 out of those two. if you have time to wait, the 3700 should b e out someday soon hopefully that is based on the same chip. currently you'd be much better off with a 1700 than a 3400 if you need quadro. Brian Cassil
I stand by the 8800GTS. I have it at home and it has performed great with some fairly heavy scenes. (2 million polys plus)
AJLynn
The 8800GTS is good stuff. It's been somewhat obsoleted by the 8800GT, which is faster at most tasks, uses less power and costs less, or at least it will once the market for it stabilizes (it's still pretty new). I wasn't aware of that. So in terms of performance is it somewhere in between the GTS and the GTX? I thought the gap there was already pretty slim, but if it's priced even lower than the GTS that would make sense... sort of.
AJLynn
Yeah, the GT seems to be closer to the GTX than the GTS. When I saw the testing and reviews my immediate reaction was that it looked like the new best option for a lot of things, but its projected price point is $200 and it hasn't come down to that yet. Newegg has an XFX 650MHz version at $220 that's probably the best price/performance option at the high end.
solidworm
Got a 8800GT instead and its performing quite better than i expect. Thanks.:D
Dave Buchhofer
yea, its hard to beat the price/performance on a GT at the moment. supposedly the newer ATI cards are of similar speed/price also, but i dont have much experience with them personally
Geoffc
...still waiting on all those 9800 rumors. it'll be insane for gaming, er I mean production.
amoroso
The new Nvidia 8800 GTS (G92) came out last week... they are better than the 8800GT and are up to par with the 8800GTXs if not a little better (till they come out wtih G92s of course)
