Guest nazcaLine
recently i installed max 2008, and before that i removed my max 8. thing is that all my .max files don't show up in the max logo, and when i want to setup "always open this file with this program" max just doesn't appear in the list. so all my max files appear like an unknown file archive, i can't see thumbnails, it's frustrating. i have no problems opening and working with the files, though. any idea about this? what can i do? Ricardo Eloy
Click on a .max file's properties and assign 3ds max to open it. This "always use.." option often doesn't work.
grantsalisbury
Eduardo Here is the fix. Create a new text file and name it thumbnail.txt Copy this text into the file. --------------------------------- Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.max\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}] @="{9DBD2C50-62AD-11d0-B806-00C04FD706EC}" --------------------------------- Now rename the file thumbnail.reg. Right click on thumbnail.reg and select merge. Your thumbnails will now be displayed inside of windows explorer. If you have the same problem with Photoshop let me know. I could email you the fix for that as well. Hope this helps you out.

If its not on the list then click the 'Browse' button and browse for your 3dsmax.exe file - that will associate the .max extension with the correct application. That's just not possible. I'm not talking about the list of named programmes that opens up first - at the bottom of that window there is a Browse button that lets you pick any .exe on your system. I assure you it is possible, and I'm with NazcaLine it drives me nuts. Not nuts enough to have blind faith in the operability of Windows mind you, but it does hamper the work flow. Ray
Have you tried going through Windows Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>File Types? Scroll to the Max file extension and either assign or reassign the 'opens with'. If the Max extension is not listed, then you can add it with the 'new' button. znotlin
As you might imagine, yes. But sadly it doesn't work.
Guest nazcaLine
nop, it doesn't work, by the way, i've noticed also that flash CS3 doesn't appear in the list either. and guess what...i had flash 8 installed before, installed flash cs3 and uninstalled flash 8...looks like there's a problem when uninstalling previous versions and getting new versions...it seems that windows doesn't "recognize" the new program to open the old files...because the old program is "missing"...doh...
