Devin Johnston
Well it's out and from what I've heard it's a descent update. Displacement and instancing were the big features this time along with the changing of the physical sky back to blue. I'm holding off installing it until it's been out a few weeks and I know it works but from what I've heard it's pretty solid. Those of you who have been following Maxwell from the beginning, do you think it’s living up to what was promised or is it falling short?
Fran
I think Maxwell is pretty much feature-complete for what was promised for V1. Although there are two or three things missing, they have a respectable program. I wouldn't call it revolutionary, even though they do.
CHE
I installed 1.6 today and I have to say that I was surprised to find out that it actually works as promised for a change. I was able to import a model I did in Modo into Studio and rendered an almost clean 15 min exterior test out of it. I haven't experienced any crashes so far. Studio looks a lot more friendly and it is actually intuitive. I still have to try the new features. I will continue to test it over the next couple of days. I am very happy with this release so far. Mario Pende
Everybody seems to be talking about displacements in MW forum, sorry for asking but dosent FRY already have this nice feature?
lambros
yep, along with instances. But after buying and fiddling around with all these renderers, I have to say that most of my clients prefer vray renders. Maxwell and Fry are stable enough to be used for almost anything, but I do all architectural renders with vray and leave any industrial design to unbiased renderers... Displacement in Maxwell 1.6. is nice, but in order to use it along with multilight in a 3K render requires a hell of a workstation
CHE
Well I am liking this release a lot. Studio is very stable. I haven't had any crashes so far. Here is a quick test a did last night. I'll post more later.
Devin Johnston
How is the speed? They said that 1.6 would be faster than 1.5, is that true?
CHE
It seems a faster to me specially the Voxelization process; it only takes a couple of seconds.
stuart mayes
How is the speed? They said that 1.6 would be faster than 1.5, is that true? I think it will depend on your system, but on my Opteron platform running Vista64 it's about 25%-30% faster than 1.5. Devin, I had the upgrade successfully ported to my small farm [10-nodes] in about an hour, ran the first half-dozen scenes through and nothing's tripped over yet........so far it looks good. Devin Johnston
That's good news; I'll probably get it online by the beginning of next year. Right now I'm doing everything in Vray which has turned out to be a wonderful change, I can actually render out stuff in a few hours instead of days! Justin Hunt
Careful next the clients will want the Maxwell renders in hours rather than days:rolleyes: Just tell them its still taking the same time as before JHV
mitchrichie
I noticed quite a bit of speed increase on my quad core mac pro. As said before, voxilization is much faster. Everything seems more stable as well.
Mario Pende
Guys, can MW import .3ds .dxf or .obj files or it can import geometry only thru plugins? If you can import them, how do you smooth the mesh in MX?
Devin Johnston
I know you can import 3ds files and maybe the other two as well but any smoothing must be done before you import because Studio has no editing tools for geometry.
AJLynn
Doesn't Studio have a smoothing option? Can't remember where it is, I haven't used it in a long time, but back in early spring I used it on a project where my columns were coming in faceted, even though Max knew they were supposed to be smoothed, and the quick fix was opening the MXS file in Studio and hitting some button that made it get smoothed. Devin Johnston
You may be right, I haven't used Studio in years.
AJLynn
Okay, turns out I do have MXST installed on a computer. It's version 1.5.0. The magic smoothing button, I'm pretty sure, is actually the Recalc Normals button in the Object Parameters > Display area.

Devin Johnston
At one point a long time ago they did say that lighting analysis tools would be available but that was during the beta days.
