I was curious about what do you did(or still do) before to be in the 3d world? As student, did you work at the local deli or wash the dishes? Maybe some of you still work there?

I just finish school, now I am in job hunting and I work part time in a small and very friendly hardware store in my neighborhood.

any good memory?

Worked in Burger king when I was a student, so many fond memories of playing Frisbee with frozen burger patties:)

After collage I did topographic surveying for a bit, being paid to stand around outside when the weather was fine was great, but on cold dark winter evenings wandering around a field trying not stand in cow pats was a bit miserable.

worked at making concreate floor beams in my summer holidays, what with overtime and bonus came out with a small fortune each summer with no stress .....also came out with lots of black spots on my legs from the animal fats used to lubricate the mould.

Those were the days.

I flipped burgers @ Applebees for two years out of college since I couldn't find a decent visualization or architecture firm to work for. The one I worked for was okay, but couldn't give me enough work/hours so it was working part time coming home smelling like grease for almost 2.5 years

Great thread! I've moved it to the OT forum though.

I've worked in the field of architecture since I was a teenager but I have had a few jobs not CG or Architecture related.

- paperboy (I really hated this!)

- bag boy at a grocery store (hated this too!)

- landscape drafter (awesome!)

- video store clerk (I wish I could still do this!)

- drove a golf cart shuttle to and from parties at a club house (that one lasted one night because I smashed a drunk cowboys hand and ran over his foot while dropping him off at his truck)

  • 4 months later...

Worst job I ever had was as a packer in a potato factory. All day long, potatoes come off the line in bags, I pack them into 25kg sacks then stack them 40 sacks to a pallette. Repeat to fade...

No interview required, just told to turn up. Basically if you could stick it then the job was yours. A lot left at first tea-break! Highlights included having to sign a form to opt out of the European working hours directive and agree to compulsary overtime. This involved them coming round about 3.30pm and telling you that you were staying in till 7.30pm that night.

Also the place was filthy and when you blew your nose after the shift it was pure black from the dust. Nice! Only redeeming feature was I did have an impressive set of biceps by the time I left!! :D

First job was as a paper boy, getting up at 6am every morning and cycling around town.

Then when I was 15 I was a dishwasher at a local restaurant. Hated coming home every night smelling of dish water and old food. Bleh.

Then when I was 16 I worked in a call centre for a large multi-national bank. I was in debit card operations... If you've ever had your card lost or stolen, or swallowed in an atm, or had a transaction called through for verification then I was on the other end of the phone. Was sworn at quite a few times there, no one was ever happy when they called me up!

When I was 18 and at university I worked at an internal hospital help desk in charge of hospital porters/cleaners/technicians. Could be a horrible job at times, telling nurses/docters that they couldn't have their sick patients samples picked up asap, but all in all it was ok. Doing 4 nights on, 4 nights off during uni holidays was brilliant. 7pm to 7am and over time after 12am.

During uni I worked for an architect to do my part 1 studies. It was ok and where I learned sketch-up and then max and vray etc. It was where I quickly learned that I didn't want to be an architect!
