3Dmax and Onyx

Hi, i'm having some difficulties with onyx conifer and Max. In short, when i export tree from onyx conifer and open it in 3dsmax it looks like a peace of crap, and i cant understand why, polygon count is the same as in onyx, rendered in vray with default settings, only color of needles and angle was changed. I attached image with view in onyx on left and view in 3dsmax on right, export settings in the middle. You can see that needles are extremely thin, why is that?

I agree.... a lot of the broadleaf and definately the conifers from onyx don't always have the coverage that they appear to have in the standalone... once you get them in to max. You really notice it when you can see the trunk of the tree due to the minimal coverage.

 

I really don't link using onyx conifers for this reason, so normally you have to crank up your needle and branch count to compensate for the lack of coverage. And normally your poly count gets so high that you have to go into the adjustments and switch the needles from "c" (complex) to "pl" (polyline) to keep your polygon count down to something reasonable..... but then you don't want to view the trees relatively close using the polyline needles.

Joseph: can you post your conifer render? That tree is Picea engelmannii G.con

BKittsARC: I tried onyx conifers some time before and faced same problem as now, so i just changed trees to onyx broadleaf (much of them sucks too) and problem was solved, but now i really need conifer (Christmas etc..), so i thought ill try it again, spent all day trying to fix it and no results :(

I have had similar problems with the conifer program as well. Last time I had to use those I ended up switching from actual pine-needle geometry to the 'sprite' mode (the toggle inside the treestorm plugin within MAX. I had to make an image map of a bunch of needles and a matching opacity map, but it worked pretty well in the end.... Knocked the poly count on a pine tree down from over 2 million to under 50,000 too...

Well if you're using Vray...here's what I do...export the tree at pretty much maximum settings...in other words set the needles to complex, and export, after you import it, attach all the parts together, then clone it and rotate it in place, this will make a very dense tree, now export it to a vraymesh...very large file, but it renders just fine...
