hi there,

well, am new to all this... a typical beginner,

thought i might take some time off for 3d max to see what i can do with it, am a bit familiar with the theory of it, but getting into the real thing, i realized i have some questions that need answering, so here i am!

*the 1st one is regarding the lighting..

in the general parameters of light (modify panel),

you have different options for the shadows (adv. ray trace/ mental ray shadow map/ area shadows/ shadow map/ ray traced shadow)

i tried them all, but couldn't see a difference, i mean is there??

*another thing,

in the file menu, couldn't quite get the difference between the "merge" and the " import" options, i mean don't they both help u add objects from other files 2 ur scene??

thanx n advance!

1) shadow maps create soft blurry shadows, ratraced are hard and area are a mixture. mental ray shadows are for use with mental ray.

Each of these shadows render differently with different properties. you need to play and experiment using the settings.

2) import only alows you to bring in other .max files, imports allows a whole range of file formats.

just for the sake of the rookie, i just wanted to point out your typo.....

MERGE is for other max files, not import.

I wouldn't normally correct a supermod but Strats answer for 2 is a little confusing. Merge only allows you to bring in other .max files, import allows a whole range of file formats.

edit: someone beat me to it I see.
