Working in London

You might want to check http://www.rightmove.co.uk it pretty much has every house and flat for sale and rent in the UK on it. If you type in Islington which is by no means a great area then the very very bottom of the market which is bedsits and house shares are £130-£150 a week, which is £600 a month.

Your friend earns 150k and won't pay £800 a month???? All I can say is he must be pretty tight, this is London the most expensive city to live in in the world £3 a beer, a taxi starts the clock at £5 and a one way cash ticket on the tube is £4. My mortgage on a 2 bedroom terrace is significantly more than that.

For a 1 bedder, no he wont pay that, he pays that for a 4 bedroom house in Tumbridge Wells and 600 for a flat in London. Tight not really , realistic definiterly

No, its the mortuage, he bought just before the major boom a few years ago and of cause paid off alot. The flat in London is for during the week and the house is for weekends as the commute is a bit long. Although some days it takes him longer to get to work from his London flat than it takes from TW.

I used to live in Bromley South and work in West End. It would take me an hour door to door to get into work. My cousin lived in Wimbeldon and also worked in the West-end and would take her an hour and a half to get into work. I enjoyed getting out of the city every night and rearly went into London on week-ends.

When we got to London my wife had a job already but I didn't. By the time we paid for flat deposits, train tickets and the rest, we had very little money left. I remeamber it being a huge desision to buy a 10pound clock radio:D . Once I started working however things became very easy.

^ LOLZ - Good Post!!

Pawuk, if you want to come to Melbourne I can put you in touch with some good places. Australia is great (except it has the most unaffordable housing in the world - true!)

Im definately moving - already booked, dont give 2 shits about earning money to be honest, as long as I can live / eat / socialise ill be happy, just wondering!

Pretty excited about it all. Also lol at having 6 months of living expenses! thats an insane amount of money. Thanks guys - thread closed>?

Hi nic,

Drop by squint/opera for a chat. I think the team would love to meet you.

To be honest dont worry too much about saving heaps to come over here. I came over last year (from melbourne as well) and got a job within 2 weeks. (put off coming for a year to save heaps .. but didnt need it..) .. Yes, the market might slow down but hey, if its not a permernant move , you wouldnt need heaps of cash to survive.

The only 2 things that are really pricey in comparison from melbourne are rent (Its a shocker that a huge cut of the pay goes into a teeny flat) and transport (if you live a little further a way, it can be a pain / pricey). Once you get over that initial shock of how much goes into a tiny space, you'll be alright.

Other than that, food / expenses etc are relatively cheap... Plus the best thing is being able to pop over to another country anytime.
