Xref two max files

I am working on a project where I have created mupltiple .max files. I have then xref on into the other. IE i created the site in one file and a couple of the buildings other files. The problem I am having is I can not move the xrefed files. They are not selectable at all. Is there something I am doing wrong or am I touch out of luck and have to move everything in their original file and update them. This is a real pain if I want to align the buildings differently or move them altogether.

VIZ features two methods of xref - the Object and the Scene. Xref'd objects can be selected, moved, copied, etc. Unfortunately, it seems as though they do not update all of their attributes, such as materials (from my experience, i could be wrong.)

 

It sounds like you are xref-ing a scene, in which you can't select the objects, but the entire file appears in your drawing. What you can do to manipulate the position is to create a dummy object, then "Bind" the xref to it (found in the XREF Scene... dialog box). Then any transformations you apply to the dummy objects will affect your scene.
