Need some info's on rendering

I have bought a new PC but I/m not so happy because my renderings take so much time. Is it possible a rendering in mental ray to take 5 hours?

Here is my configuration

 

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GH

4GB RAM

NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS 256MB

the video card has nothing to do with it. And yes, a couple of weeks ago, i had renders going for my thesis on files with less than a million poly's and the GI frozen, that took 7 hours. depending on how complex the scene is, especially with reflections and refraction, it can bog down. Can you post an example of the long renders and the file specs?

It might depend more on what you are trying to render than on the machine,

any comments on the scene you are trying to render?

absolutely, how can we answer when you're not telling us any info about the type/size scene you're trying to render?

Did you try giving the scene a clayish material and give it a try in vray? and compare timing? any chance in getting a screen grab on the scene/render with the results of render?

It's possible to render even for days or weeks (or more) on a single picture. It all depends on your settings, size/type of scene and size of output.
