Hello

my first post :)

Ive started using mr about a month ago and after countless problems witch with the help of this forum ive been able to resolve them... except this one :

Im unable to figure how to make transparent materials ( standard or A&D ) to be transparent agains a sky dome envolving the scene (they behave ok with all other elements of the scene)

Using max9 with mentalray, standard A&D Thin glass material

Any help finding the light would be appreciated :)

Thanks

Thanks for Your input Dennis but i allready tryied that with no sucess...

Anyway i figured out what the problem was... i and circled it ...

The dome was Jeff Patton´s latest sky dome tutorial with those fancy hidden production shaders, and were those that caused the problem with the glass.

I circled it replacing the mr Raytype Switcher with a regular bitmap... and voila transparency all the way...

If anyone knows how to resolve this with the original shader...

Thanks everyone

Sure. When you look through glass you're viewing the refraction. Notice the refraction map slot on the mr Raytype Switcher? Simply instance copy the map you used the reflected rays slot to the refracted rays slot and that will solve your refraction issues.

Could you add this solution to your original post on your blog (and expand on it) ?

I had the same problem, although I did not try to solve it.

BTW - How do you know what you know about MR ?

It's already clarified further in my latest blog entry on controlling FG using the raytype switcher. Also, don't overlook the production shader documentation that ships with 3dsmax & the info about them on Zap's blog:

From pestering the crap out of Zap, reading all the documentation/websites/books/etc. that I can get my hands on, and most importantly...setting up test scenes & adjusting settings one by one to see exactly how & what they do.

BTW, thats the same approach I have to all rendering programs...minus the pestering Zap deal of course :)
