kurtstap
ciao guys, i have been reading for aes and this is my first post. i recently bought a mac pro 8core and its amazing..pity i am running almost exclusivly on windows but thats another story. i am having major problems with vray and interior renders. whenever i do anything around 1600x1200 with high settings (irradience and light cache) max simply crashes...no error messages, just dumps me. so i spend long nights doing things which should be quite easy and quick. i dont think i have any hardware issues or memory issues. any advice? i did not include any specifics because it happens on file of differing polygon counts and simetimes even quite small scenes. HELP. thanks
Dave Oliver
are you using displacement or high-poly plants?
manta
Are you using windows X64...watch your ram usage in the task manager to see how high it goes...
kurtstap
ciao guys , thanks, often with displace but also without. the common factor i can see is the size of the render...higher than 1600, or with a higher quality preset. i am still using an old windows xp. i am looking into upgrading to xp64, with max9 64bit. as for the ram, ive seen it crash even at pretty acceptable usage. its quite confusing. will let you know how it goes. thanks again
rivoli
at what point does it crash exactly? while calculating the light cache, while rendering, loading maps..? it definitely sounds like a memory issue, you may even have 32 gigs of ram, but it wont make any difference under a 32 bit os. 1600x1200 it's no high resolution by any standard, and vray shouldn't have any problem rendering at that size. having a look at your settings would help, as knowing poly count, or if there's any displacement, proxies and so on in a given problematic scene would. and what vray version. kurtstap
thanks mate, all the software is very recent, but i am beginning to think my main problem is the OS at 32bit. the machine is undervalued as it is at the moment and i will install xp64 bit this weekend...then we'll see. will keep you posted. it crashes at differnt points but usually while calculating light cashe or near the very end of the render...very frustrating. i will try the upgrade to 64bit. thanks again
rivoli
it crashes at differnt points but usually while calculating light cashe or near the very end of the render... it's quite likely a memory issue then, light cache with high settings can use quite a lot, as using adaptive subds AA. switching to xp 64 will fix it. Dave Oliver
i have 64x with 4GB RAM and i have had that same problem. i ended up rendering different scene elements to vrimg and extracting alpha maps so i could put them back together. The problem (i think) turned out to be a combination of using large bitmaps for textures, using a lot of vraydisplacemod, and vrayfur for grass. i was getting acquainted with vrays new features on that one and wanted to try them all out. so i would suggest turning off any displacement, and removing your plants, and see if it renders large. then add back in what you need to one piece at a time to see what your limits are

I use 32bit with 3gb or ram but with some of these adjustments It worked fine. Good Luck;)
