RyanSpaulding
Is there something wrong with the site right now, or am I only seeing 1 job in the entire US? That seems quite low. I dont follow the site too much, but is the activity level that low on the jobs site? Basically, I think it's time to move onto a company which better supports me and isn't as cheap as making me buy my own computer for work. Half the software I've had to buy as well. Blah. Any ideas comrades?

RyanSpaulding
Do you have a portfolio or website I could look at? I'm in the middle of redesigning it. I did it when I wasn't very good at flash. I'm better now so this requires a revamp. I did it when 2 local firms wanted to hire me...and that was when I had nothing up, so it was rushed. http://www.ryan-spaulding.com/ So that's the old site and the arch viz was using Vue. Now I'm using Max/VRay (finishing up 2 current projects tonight as well as another early last week) so the content's old. Best I can do for now. I'll be posting my resume and all that on the jobs site eventually...if I can be assured viz firms actually use it...or if I'm better off scouring HotJobs, Craigslist, and Monster. One post from an NY firm just seems low considering the amount of arch and engineering firms out there. Ultimately, I'd like to land somewhere where I'm used in-house. Jeff Mottle
We normally have around 20 at any give time, but most people don't place ads around the holiday season. Expect the volume to pick up in the next few weeks and into next month.
ommait
I have a tough time finding freelance gigs. Most are by word of mouth. Could we set up a part of the job site to freelance.

EddieLeon
I wonder if low job posts are an indication of the state of the economy. If they go up then I guess things are still good. Let's hope they are

Still paying it off the software I buy is usually photoshop upgrades, various plugins, and content. they are ex-land surveyors. I've been an artist all my life. they dont see the need for these things. i disagree. I bought xfrog, lowpoly3d stuff, some dosch stuff, AND onyx in these 3 1/2 years. It was my only choice. I need to be happy and satisfied with my work...so that requires extras. It's so hard in this market to find work. I've had a few leads, but nothing has panned out. And I'm not sure that my fiance' would appreciate me moving her across the country right now...tho it'd be nice is she was down to move. We'll see I guess. EddieLeon
2 thoughts: If you keep buying the equipment then they will never "need" to do it themselves. They are taking advantage of you. However, if they allow you to do freelance work on the equipment after hours then the investment will be justified. My 2 cents
alias_marks
Content purchases/program upgrades are a tricky thing to deal with inside of an established company. The approach I would suggest to begin building this kind of library is to roll it (and bill it) to a certain project. Place it in the fee schedule ahead of time and after about 4-5 of these projects you may find you've got a pretty good library of stuff you can now use on all your projects. The before/after approach is always a good one too. Show your boss/client an image before content is inserted and then the after and its almost always an easy sell when they can see the difference. Then have an estimated amount of time it would take the build the content yourself vs. the cost of buying a 100 buck evermotion set. Almost always worth the content purchase. just my 2 cents. Sorry to diverge from the original thread topic, but a good convo nonetheless. M-
EddieLeon
Mike, that's a good tactic to use. I see you've probably used it before while working at a large firm I went through the same issues while working at a big firm in Miami. What I eventually realized was that 3d was not important to them. It was not part of their core-competence. When the company was bought out by a bigger firm things only got worse. The problem with some firms is that they haven't figured out how to make 3d profitable. I think some have and they support their teams well. Such as, Parsons Brinkerhoff and their viz team called Company 39 and Little Diversified with Skyscraper Digital. I bet there are more, but it doesn't seem common yet. Justin Hunt
RyanSpaulding - are you at least charging them rent for the use of your machine? Who is covering the wear and tear, insurance etc? Bum deal for you, great deal for the company What I find interesting is how far behind the thinking is with these firms. I had these issues 10 years ago, when 3D was considered a luxury. Luckily the powers that be saw how usefull and financially benificial 3D is in terms of design development that they were willing to throw alot of money behind it. Only one place I worked at went backwards in cutting back the 3D to really basic modeling, luckily I left them just before that policy got rolled out. Where I am at now the 3D department is the fastest growing in the company and are well underway to generating our own income on top of supporting the desgn team. Anyway back on thread, I too have kept an eye on the jobs here. Something for Oz only cropes up once in a blue moon. I am sure that if some more architectural recrutment companies found out about this site there would be more jobs advertised. Until then I have to rely on word of mouth. Anyway good luck, I am sure something will come up JHV

Your in the right place, Madison, however your Market 'you' know how tough the market really is... LOL You can define it as such but the arse backwardness of it doesn't seem to create much of a demand "Not sure" ... son ya'll better find out.
