Radiosity & Standard Lighting

I have been playing around with radiosity and like what I have been able to produce but wonder if I am doing this correctly. Is it right to assume if you use radiosity in your scene that all the lights in the scene should be of photometric lights ? Or can/should you use a combination of photometric and standard lighting in a scene?

Sebree,

You can use whatever combination of lights you want, you can always include/exclude lights from the rad. sol.. If you are doing light intensity studies, I would think you would use all IES lights, but if your just looking for well lit images, do what ever you need to, to make it work.

The reason why you should use Photometric Lights with Radiosity is because Standard Lights do not respect physical units and do render without any decay.

Since the default Radiosity Rendering method is "Render Direct Illumination", the Scanline Render will render the direct light from the light itself, thus rendering the Standard Lights with no decay.

If you use Re-Use Direct Illumination, than it's OK. All you'll lose is the ability to set the intensity and the specific parameters for the Photometric Lights.

If you set the decay in the lights it will still not render the same, because there's the "Decay Start" option which is not existant to Photometric Lights. It should be set for 1 meter, since it's where the intensity is 100% (intensity/1^2 = intensity)
