AJLynn
Whoa, hold up there. The Imperial system is named after the British Empire - nothing at all to do with American foreign policy, which is a whole other issue. And I'd like to go on record as to how irritating it is that so many people will criticize the American government's our-way-or-the-highway attitude toward other countries while saying exactly the same thing about the Metric system. Our weights and measures don't conform to your standard because they're our weights and measures. We get to choose what units we use in our country. It's probably the only thing we do as a country that has no effect at all on anybody else and is nobody's business but our own. If you hate it that much you're welcome to go somewhere else. That's why I say the Metric system is Commie. It's part real, part joke and part metaphor - real because the perception of the Metric system as a Communist tool for globalization of the Soviet system was a real (if not the primary) reason the effort to make Metric the US standard a few decades ago was so resoundingly rejected, a joke because in postmodern society references to that period of Commiephobia are necessarily multilayered and a metaphor because whenever most Americans hear somebody talking about how we need to standardize this stuff with what the Europeans are doing it causes a reaction that's hardwired into the American subconscious, of not wanting to be led by European standards. Tommy L
Too much denial. I can tell you think the 'three year plan' is ultimately the USA's roadmap to salvation and digital simplicity.

Tommy L
I think theres far too much talk about communism in a derogatory fashion here. I really dont reckon you americans have given Communism a fair crack of the whip..... Hows about before America dips its toe in pool of metricism, it has an introductory 3 year period of communism. Once you realise that a gram of bread is not enough and you need a thousand grams of metric bread to make a big 'kilogram' loaf, you'll appreciate the metric system a whole lot more. This 'three year plan'. Instead of 'Commies' introducing the metric system, we use the commie system as an introduction to metricity. (Whats the Polish three year plan?) blowback
you know what's funny. Sarcasm is lost in translation when we post...... Is that true about the commie standardization? I am gonna look that up. I thought it was just a way for the whole world to be on the same page.
Tommy L
Yes, we need a color-coded text palette for level of sarcasm and/or irony. Thats a point, if the US cant even adopt irony, how are they going to understand millimeters? I think irony is an extension of advanced mathematics in language. Irony can be an algorythm. Could we get irony put into one of those metric/ imperial converters..... cm/inches metres/yards miles/km irony/slapstick (that would be written in both red and green for its sarcasm AND irony)

RodT
while we're at it, what about shoe sizes, I wear a 15 or 48, doesn't matter, can't find either and I just settle for wearing the shoe box
znotlin
I think the US should go for metric, and while we're at it we should make Esperanto the national language. And while we're all forward looking One Worlders, perhaps we should give this another look. http://zapatopi.net/metrictime/ Not sure how many days there are in a weekend of you have a 10 day week, if they were thinking still just two, it's not a big surprise the French decided against it. It also would be interesting to move back to a calendar where september, october, november and december were in fact the 7th through the 10th month - that would make more sense, but somewhat inconvenient to file quarterly. Tommy L
Mondays are a pain in the arse, but Id rather do away with Tuesday. Nothing good even happens on Tuesday, commie or not.
