i remember seeing this before any patches came out. I forgot to look again but its still there.

draw a 1x1x1 cube use the scaler to make it bigger. What are it's perameters? Bigger cos you just made it bigger? NO exactly the same. Doh!

Any fixs? Quite obviously this is crap. Autodesk on the offical formum came out with some crap about this but its obviously a dumb flaw that makes them look like school boys. Am i right?

no, you're wrong.. sorry... the primitve has its own values. If you scale it, it just adds an invisible "modifier" scale on top of it, just right click on the scale button in your toolbar and you'll see what the scale is. And if you know the correct scale why don't you just fill in the correct values. By the way: there is a scale/move/rotate modifier its called Xform.. I dunno if VIZ has it..

This has worked like this since MAX1.x way before there was VIZ ;)

Hi matt,

Every manual, user guide and book that I've read on max claims to NOT use the scale tool an sich, but instead add an Xform and than scale it.

Like Quizzy said, say you got a cube of (10,10,10) and scale it up to 5000% max still sees a box of size 10 with a transform (scale) modifier on it. It's not the same as a (500,500,500)-cube although it might look like it.

As a test, just draw a plane, add those two cubes (1: s=10, scaled 5000% and 2: s=500) and a *SM-light and toy around with the shadow settings...

So it's better not to use the scale tool at all mainly because there are other ways to do so (e.g. sub-object modeling, xform,...) but especially since you'll have a lot of unforseen problems.

the advantages of using a seperate move rotate and scale,

is so you can make a zillion instances and still move rotate and scale each one independantly,

so each objects still renders as an instance,

in a fraction of the time.

like when doing a forest of trees etc

Matt,

The most essential skill an instructor has is the ability to bullshit his/her way through what they do NOT know. It shows confidence which most people mistake for knowledge. I have been lied to by many, many instructors and now take all information which is not backed up by a textbook as 'theory' until I prove/disprive it myself.

The fact that we are all here at cgarchitect.com in lieu of online games and e-mail chainletters proves that we are fairly intelligent individuals who can sift through the crap, absorb what is useful and leave all the idiots in our dust.

The fact that one instructor was convincing enough in his performance to deceive you does not reflect badly on you. Not in my book. This simply lets you recognize it next time you come across it.

Everything is a learning experience, its all in how you look at it.
