VIZ daylight system

I've been spending a lot of time with VIZ lately, but I think I'm not understanding something about the VIZ daylighting system.

In one of my models, I have the daylight set perfectly. I make one small change to the model (not the light), and it changes the entire lighting dramtically. I'm getting HUGE contrast between light and dark (as if it's a spotlight) and no matter how much I crank up the skylighting, it won't change. In fact, even when I change the sun intensity, nothing changes. VERY bright on the side where the sun is coming from, and VERY dark on the other.

Here's what I tried. I took my scene with the perfect light. I deleted the model. I merged another file with the SAME MODEL (no lights) into the perfect lighting system. This is the same model but a few subtle changes. This changed the entire lighting and materials are not rendering the same at all.

What I don't understand is why when I have my lighting setup exactly the same, but a small change in the model, the entire scene is different.

Any advice? What am I missing about this daylight system? I've tried everything in the environment menu, and even when I keep it the same as the good model, things are completely different. Shouldn't the same lighting system with all the same parameters provide the same lighting in a scene with slight changes to the model?
