modeling from picture

Hi guys. I received a email from a potential employer asking me to choose a picture from a magazine or website and reproduce it identically. I am having some trouble regarding the dimensions. Does anyone know any technique or tutorial that helps model from a picture that is in perspective? Thanks a lot.

Don't know of any tutorials, but I recently did the same thing for a portfolio piece working from a photograph taken by a friend of mine. Start off by bringing the reference image in as your viewport background and set your render size to the same dimensions as the image. Now when you show safe frame you will have your image as background in your viewport with the correct proportions.

Next I guessed the height of the room to be 2.4m and used this to figure out the width of the room and set up a box using those dimensions. I then set up a camera, again guessing the height from the ground, and moved the box around trying different lens settings till the perspective matched. You could use camera matching utility, but it's usually easier to eyeball it.

After that you can start subdividing your room and extruding polys for doors, windows, cornicing etc. Set up your lighting to match the reference image and study how the light interacts with the materials in the image, paying close attention to reflectiveness, glossiness, texture and colour. I took a bit of license with the furniture, modifying pieces I had rather than modelling them all from scratch.

Here are some images showing the process I went through, I hope they help and look forward to seeing your results. :)

Pick an image with known ceiling tiles ;-).

The longer view of that is try to find things you know or can guestimate. Is that door 3'x7'? How far off the ground was the camera when the picture was taken? Find some perspective lines, where the meet is the same height as that. Does that mean the ceiling comes out a 9'10"? Maybe you were a bit off and the ceiling is 10' even.

I did a small job(personal) same what you are talking. Actually, its not a project but I was just keen and amazed with the photo i saw from a local magazine. I asked myself, why not do it in 3D.

Here are my considerations:

1. Can I get the lighting exactly, not perfect but same mood?

2. Can I model everything, not all the items but mostly the main elements? If I don't have it all at least I have another option from my Library.

3. Familiarize most of the objects that is shown on the scene.

I hope that small points could help you out. Good Luck.

By the way, here are the images I did.:)

first image: perspective, 2nd image: photo, 3rd image: wirezz

Ok guys, here it goes. I just finished those ones. I need your help. Could you tell me whether the modeling is similar and what could be improved? Please, don't mind the the textures. First I wanna get the modeling on wheels. Thanks for watching.
