Iain Denby
I have windows XP 64bit and 8GB ram. After using Photoshop CS3 for a while on a large file I got a windows message saying my virtual memory was too low. Currently my Virtual memory reads: Initial. 2046mb Maximum. 4092mb Total. 2046mb recommended. 12285mb Anyone know what the initial and maximum should be? William Alexander
Been there.... Typically keep the top end 4096-6000. Super large PSD's, take and up your settings to the recomended for the duration of that project or let the system do it and enjoy the pop up window LOL. The idea is to keep minimum/optimal foot print on the HD resources. My understanding is that the system allocates and commits specified amounts of disk space to virtual memory exclusively
alfienoakes
Those are very low settings. Initial size should be 1.5 times RAM, and maximum should be 3 times. Check this out: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308417
alfienoakes
Good explanation of what happens and why: http://www.nilpo.com/2007/07/windows-xp/the-truth-about-virtual-memory/ Thats also assuming you are using the NTFS and not FAT.. for file sizes larger than 4Gb..
