Viewport texture size

SHORT TITLE FOR SUGGESTION/BUG/ENHANCEMENT REQUEST

Increase viewport texture size.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF YOUR REQUEST

The texture size in the viewports is now limited to 512pix, would be nice to be able to change it to 1024 or maybe even 2048. With increased memory and speed on/of graphic cards this should not be a complete waste of an option.

WHY THIS REQUEST IS IMPORTANT TO YOU

To see more detail in the textures in the viewport.

  • 1 year later...

go to comtomize tab > preference settings > viewports tab > configure driver > and check the box for match match bitmap size as closely as possible.

This will show the bitmap with its full resolution.

Hope i am a help

I see what you mean, i think max developers dont realise hardware is improving and there ignorant to the fact people are now running 2gb GPU's.

Not sure but sounds like something that could be scripted...

Ste

max developers DO realize the speed and memory size increasements, hence all the development they do with hardware shading in the viewports. (see blog from Neil Hazzard, and Ken Pimentel)

scripting it would be not impossible, but its a hassle. It would mean that the script has to actually decrease the resolution of all the textures used.

I would like to add just a little thing.

Big textures displays correctly only in hardware display mode of material. Even 6 k is ok as far as you don't display many of them... I usually don't use that big files, it uses to much memory.

Procedural maps don't display correctly because that are mostly 3d maps and I don't know why but max just doesn't handle it in viewport. Anyway changing to explicit map channel isn't the best solution. You just loose the best of having 3d procedural maps - it doesn't generate seams as far as It's not based on object mapping.
