mesht
Hi guys, the office i'm working with has a mixed of different generations of workstations. for my own personal workstation, it's the previous generation Dell Precision workstation with the P4 dual processor, not today's dual core technology. i'm trying to 'talk into' my IT dept. to do a major upgrade, as i'm one of the visualizers doing 3d 90% most of the time and my pc is slowing me down, with memory crashing often due to the 32bit OS. we have a quad-core rendering machine, but only one quantity for the whole office and it's constantly being used for network rendering with my other colleagues. so, it's who come first basis. tried explaining last time but no action was taken. mbowers
I had the same problem years ago at an old firm. The money was there but the 'big wigs' just didn't get it. And all it took was the 'blue screen of death' during a rush job for a major client. The project didn't get done in time and within 2 weeks i had a new top of the line machine. If your IT department doesn't want to listen to your recommendations, then i would make a list of the hardware YOU think it would take in order for you to make your job more efficient and cost productive, and take it to the Head Cheese. Perhaps this is a bold approach but if they simply don't care..then you have to explain that you can't do your job adequately with the hardware/software you have. Hope this helps. mesht
thanks for the advice well...managed to convince the IT dept of my situation, they will consider my 'problems' and my IT guy will speak to the Head directly. well, at least they are aware of the situation. given my recommendations for the ideal hardware...hope, just like you, will get a top of the line machine
Tommy Burns
You need to speak to your head boss yourself not I.T. talking to him. In my experience I.T. people haven't a notion about what it takes to render an image and I'd say alot of the time they think that YOU just don't know what your doing. I had problems in my work with I.T. and getting new hardware they threw up all types of obstacles. When I went to the main boss and explained to him what I needed I got it instantly as long as he verified it. This meant that it didn't affect I.T's budget which is usually what they are worried about or else worried about the extra work for them. So go straight to the top it's the only way.
