salf
Yep...after using Vray for about 6 years, I have to start using VIZ without it, the office that I started working for, doesnt have Vray. Obviously, I kinda forgot everything with scanline, radiosity, etc. I remember, I used to create a "dome" of lights, with really soft intensity and shadows to fake ambient lighting, and then a direct light for the sun. However the render im doing is too dark and grey, everything that should be white isnt but grey, and if I increase the intensity of the dome lights, then the whites start being whiter, but the other materials (brick, concrete, etc) start burning out in a horrible way. Can anyone give some advise?, I just need to be put in the right track and Ill take it from there. thanks. (maybe I should try that daylight system, but never used it before, adn I remember radiosity was a little comlpicated and took too much time, then again, it was 6 years ago with older PCs)
AJLynn
What version of Viz is it? If it's 2008 you can switch to mental ray from Vray extremely easily.
salf
Its 2007, but I think it does have mental ray. AJLynn
I'm no good at that version of mental ray, I always got my lighting to look a lot better than my materials, but there's a ton of stuff on it out there and it's still not all that different from Vray. It's a step-at-a-time kind of thing. Also, any references for mental ray for Max8 would apply to Viz07.
Justin Hunt
Most of the tutorials that come up with Google are for mr 3.5 and before. The tutorial and documentation that ship with the program are a great place to start JHV
Claudio Branch
http://www.theqball.com/tutorials/mr-exterior Here is a link to a pretty good tutorial for setting up exterior lighting with Mental Ray. You can also adapt this setup to work with Scanline. You just will not have the soft edges on your ray-traced shadows.

MR seems really fast and straight forward....somehow easy, I know it get more complex as one start to really learn it, but its incredible fast....looks promising, I think Im gonna forget Vray...hehe...
