malevy
just starting using sketchup a few days ago.. what an amazing program. I showed my 13yr old son the program and he was building houses that would take me days to make in 3ds.. Are there other plugins available for this program like for rendering and also materials that look a little more realistic.. ?

AJLynn
There are several rendering plugins, like Vray, Maxwell, Podium and Kerkythea (notable for being free and hard to spell). Some or all of these require the Pro version of Sketchup, I know Maxwell does but I haven't looked into the rest.
bytor
malevy, Vray plugin for Sketchup works in pro and free. There is a 30-day trial version available. Works right inside of sketchup. Kerkythea as mentioned is free, and works externally from sketchup and has a good exporter. A new version which is quicker and has more features was just released! Podium is the easiest for beginners (currently it uses the older Kerkythea engine to render) and works right inside of sketchup. Works in Pro or free - give the demo version a try. They each have their own benefits - try them all! Bytor

oyercab
Try Kerkythea!! If you give it a chance, study the tutorials, and read the huge number of informative postings on their forum, you'll be amazed at the results you (and your son!) will get. P.R.S. Sivakumar .
Kerkythea is the way to go IMHO. Just visit http://www.kerkythea.net and see the galleries and see the "Galleries - Finished Projects" section of the Forum. You will find out for yourself how good this is.
