3dSol
Hi everyone I was browsing through stock photography sites, looking at how much they charge for architecture images as a parameter for my prices I was surprised to find many photo-real 3D renderings at a site called istockphoto dot com, where they have a "credit" system for their images it turns out that a 1600x1200 photo-real rendering is sold there at 5 US Dollars average http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/homes_and_gardens/homes/home_interiors/3297538_home_interior_with_fireplace_and_sofas_3d_rendering.php?id=3297538 I found this quite outrageous, i don't understand what business the people that make these images are into but they are going to drive everyone else out of business what do you guys think? 3dS
Devin Johnston
Well I think they are just selling that particular image, it's not like you can call them up and have them model and render your project for $5.
neko
i'm a little confused who would want / need to buy a 3D image like that, but if it has been downloaded almost 1000 times, and you suggest it costs $5, then the business model is very sound and profitable. JamesTaylor
of that $5 the artist who posted the image for download will only recieve a set % the rest is kept by the site... very much like turbosquid but for images. there are other sites like this that actually charge less to download an image, its been a while since i've had to use any of them but dreamstime.com comes to mind

We all know clients aren't always the best at describing their ideal design approach as well as someone who actually works in the field of design. Searching the web and shelling out 5 bucks if you see an image that may be in the direction you want to design is way quicker than sketching an idea for 2 hours. Sindala
I use this site a lot for background images etc. Seems like an ok deal for this renderer. 1000 downloads at an average of 5 bucks is 5000. 20% of that is still 1000 for the renderer. Not bad at all.

EddieLeon
Especially if this is in addition to whatever the contract for the job paid. Yes, but some clients might not want you to resell the rendering. I would suggest adding something to the terms & conditions of your contract to be on the safe side. Otherwise, I think it's a great idea to make some extra cash from the 3d projects that have been completed. Also, from a marketing standpoint it's good extra exposure to be listed on popular websites like iStockPhoto.
Claudio Branch
Otherwise, I think it's a great idea to make some extra cash from the 3d projects that have been completed. This makes me wonder: Are there are also large companies using Turbo Squid to create additional revenue from their existing models?
EddieLeon
Are there are also large companies using Turbo Squid to create additional revenue from their existing models? Hi Claudio, I know some artists that sell on TurboSquid. But, I don't know if any of the large 3d companies do this also. My company doesn't. We created our own 3d model site instead. Actually, the cool thing is that Neoscape was our first customer
Claudio Branch
We created our own 3d model site instead. Hi Eddie. Interesting. I looked around on the Spine3D website and never noticed. I may have to look again. It may be more profitable in the big picture to share some assets and make the real dollars on a collaboration effort! BTW, I have a copy of your Spine publication (Issue 2) and all I can say is WOW. The quality rivals that of your website. I may need a subscription... EddieLeon
What's the address of the site? ModelUp.com My intent wasn't to promote our website. I just wanted to make the point that studios have a lot of 3d models that just collect dust after the projects are completed. We took a long term view so we chose to build our own site instead of using TurboSquid. By the way, I have paid for some advertising on CGArchitect for ModelUp so I hope Jeff doesn't mind the plug. aaron-cds
I'll plug it. It's a good resource. I've bought several people from the athletic, casual and business sections. Although, getting rid of the green screen is a pain. Alpha channels would be nice, fyi. More content would be great too. Finding good people is tough. Finding good people is tough. Thanks Aaron! I hear you about the alpha channel. I'm dumbfounded why we didn't upload the ones that were already separated. We'll get some new ones up there asap w/alphas. Thanks for the feedback and your renderings look great!
