upshot
I was just reading here that viz 8 will only support 4 cores or 4 processors... Some say it runs fine under XP x64 but the only person quoting that was a mac rig user with x64 (??). I'm looking at an upgrade from VIZ 2005 at the moment but this whole subject gives me pause. a. is it true that Viz 2008 will only run one core under x64? b. if your tied to x32 to take advantage of the Q6600 what is the best way to get the most out of the ram limit on an x32 rig? AJLynn
I've never heard of it running on only one core under x64. I have XP32 at work and ran it for a while and it did work with all my cores... and it's supposed to be fine under x64... if I have a demo copy sitting around I'll install it at home and check. But the issue being discussed on that thread was that mental ray under Viz08 is limited to 4 cores (which seems like a horrible idea - they actually reduced it from 8 to 4 right when people were starting to buy 8-core computers - guess it's so they can sell more Max...) and a Q6600 has 4 cores, so you wouldn't have that problem. upshot
Exactly, I want to work more with mental ray, the improved daylight system (always hated the old version... I tend to just link a direct target light to it! lol) and the simplified 'architectural' materials look great as I have limited time to fuss with materials. Guess a trial run is in order after the build... If you have the time I'd really appreciate a guinea pig run since your running almost an identical rig to the one I'm building... AJLynn
Mine is only dual core.
Tommy L
Just to let you know, the big split between max and viz is now that Viz will always be 32bit and Max is 32 and 64. The other main difference is that Viz has limited render nodes for Mental Ray (I thik you have 1 machine with Viz and 10 with Max) In my view it is now worth the extra to buy Max. AJLynn
Wait, Viz will always be 32 bit? Surely eventually they'll have to break down and make a 64.
Tommy L
Thats not what theyre saying at the moment. Makes me think back to the 'phasing out Viz' rumours.......its quite a devious way of doing it.
