help - funny faces

hi,

i'm new to modelling in 3dsmax (trying to ditch sketchup)

ive made a polyline. and extruded it with an extrude modifier. then added an edit poly modifier.

i've got some faces that seem to have a black gradient on.

i tried to flip and unify normals, but it's not that.

so far i've been deleting the face and redrawing those bits.

could anyone tell me what caused this please, and how best to fix it?

here is a pic.

thanks in advance

Those faces are probably turning out that way because the initial line work contains undwelded vertices.

Make sure that you weld all of your vertices prior to adding any modifier or converting a spline to mesh/poly. However, you should be able to fix the problem by welding the vertices afterwards. As a last resort, delete those polys and recreate them.

Also check that your with your original polyline all of the vertex's are on the same plane. Ie if you have drawn it in the top view (plan view) then all of the vertex should have a value of 0 on the z axis. I sometimes find if I have vertex's that are not on the same plane and I extrude them I get that black look.

I believe Michael has the correct answer. I would put money on it being a smoothing group issue. The faces are being smoothed by a little function that isnt really used too much. It has merit in modelling for video game assets but not really high detail stuff. Look up the help file for a bit of a lesson on it. It may come in handy one day.
