difference between xref and file linking

We are working on a model in cad which has turned out to be little heavy. so whats the best method to get into max because is shutting down when we import it. is it done thru file linking or xref

We should be able to move the 3d model when we get into max and also shud be able to apply materials to it. Just dont want to import it completely

You can`t import a dwg file via Xref. This only works with .max files.

For heavy files, I normally use Import > AutoCAD Drawing, so the drawing comes not as a referenced dwg file, but as regular splines. A lot lighter.

i used import only but the file taking a lot time to import and sometimes just crashes max

Then you should clean the file in ACAD prior to importing it.
