tecton3d
I'm having trouble figuring out why my cpu usage is so damn sporradic... for example, right now i only have aim and mozilla firefox open and useage never drops below 14%. I know this isn't a lot, but it's just enough to be a bother on a rather old P4 laptop that keeps my core temp (via speedfan) to 77C which is just shy of the thing shutting down. All of the fans in the computer are still working and i'm pretty sure the heatsink isn't clogged... anyway, I'm concerned that there is something running in the background that i'm not aware of and if so, where do I find it and how the hell do i get rid of it? i also get a really annoying beep about every 30 seconds from under the keyboard that sounds exactly the same as the noise made just before it shuts off due to no battery juice. __________________ prost

P4's always have run hot. 14% still sounds high, though your idle usage does depend on other processes. Check your Task Manager to find the processes that are using your CPU. A quick way to check any process you see in the task manager is to google it...type the process in EXACTLY. Important as "rundll.exe" is good, whereas rund1l.exe is a trojan. anyway, I'm concerned that there is something running in the background that i'm not aware of and if so, where do I find it and how the hell do i get rid of it? If nothing stands out in the Task manager, update all your anti-virus/ spyware apps and scan. i also get a really annoying beep about every 30 seconds from under the keyboard that sounds exactly the same as the noise made just before it shuts off due to no battery juice. Motherboard beeps can also indicate overheating - probably the case if it's running at 77deg. What sort of laptop is it? Also, if you're using your laptop on your lap, try putting a hard surface under it - a book perhaps - laptops on laps overheat the CPU and your nuts. Bad news if you want a family. shaneis
Just a side note - there has been a pretty nasty leak in Firefox 2.0.0.12 - installing the NoScript plugin will cover you. Highly recommend it. http://noscript.net/ Sorry 'bout the double post
