Guest nazcaLine
i'm modelling in Max and i want to know how could i offset a row of edges (see the picture), that is, i want to have that row of edges , say, 90cm below. i tried with extruding the edges with 0 in height and giving de desired offset in the "base height" parameter, and it works but the result is not perfectly parallel, i have to align vertexes. how could you do this? please help!!! bijoy
Hi nazcaLine, i think what u need to do is connect those edges together (pic attached). i mean select all those edges and use the connect function. i'm not sure if editable mesh has one but editable poly has it. connect choose 1 and u will get a line that u have drawn in the pic. problem is it wont be exactly the rite height from the top so u will have to move the vertices upwards or downwards. draw a rectangle with the measurements u want, 2d snap it to the top of the points, and just 2d snap the vertices to it. well thats the only way i know how to do it. hope this helps. p.s. i cant upload the image i just altered for the explanation...ill get it uploaded once i can. BrianKitts
Instead of doing it with offsetting the line, I would just grab the top faces in edit mesh (or poly) mode hold shift and clone them down. pretty much the same result. you'd just have a couple more faces in your object. Guest nazcaLine
brian: the problem is that those polys won't "mark" or draw the edges on the vertical polys, and that's ultimately what i want.i can't use those edges to modify the vertical polys. but guess what, today in the morning i had an inspiration and i tried a different method and it works: select the top edges, move them down, then extrude the polygons. and i have waht i want. but anyway it would be interesting to know if somebody knows a different method. i tried also cloning the vertexes and move them down and connect: it won't work, the vertexes dont "belong" to the polys, they're independent. thanks anyway for the help, and if anybody has any more ideas they're welcome. nymn
It seems like you could do as brian mentioned and clone the top faces down, and if you wanted to create edges within the polys on the sides, you could trace the cloned edges with the cut tool in sub-object mode. once you have cut the side polys you no longer need the cloned faces so just trash 'em. The cuts would remain, and you could extrude as needed. i often use geometry as a stencil with the cut tool in sub-object mode and edge/midpoint snaps, then trash the stencil if i dont need it... just an idea
louis.cho
why not use the connect function and aling the edge position with world or relative if you want precision?
