Logitek
Hello, I've been wondering if there was a way to update a vray proxy and what would be the way to do it. Let's say I have converted an ONYX tree into a Vray Proxy and I used the option to automatically replace my tree with the proxy in my scene. Now what if I want to go back and make changes to the original object (my original object is not in the scene anymore)? Do I have to create an empty scene, put that original Onyx tree, make the changes I want, and re-create the proxy overwriting the old one? Is that the (best/only/craziest) way to do it? Also, I know it's been discussed before, but the pivot placement when creating a proxy is quite a problem, because when you center it afterwards and want to change proxy, it places the new proxy at the old pivot position (which can of course be a huge scene breaker if you instanced the old proxy a few times). The only workaround I found, is center the object onto the origin before turning it into a vray proxy... THEN place it in my scene. This way, the vray proxy itself is correct and you can replace it as you wish later on (as long as the proxy you want to replace it with has been created at the origin, of course)... I hope this was clear Thanks for your input on the first part of this post. Cheers,
Crazy Homeless Guy
When working with Onyx trees I would always work with a master Onyx Tree proxy Max file. Save this file to your library, and whenever you create a new tree that you are going to proxy, load it in that file, and proxy it while at 0,0,0. then move the proxy off of 0,0,0 and save the file with the proxy referenced in it. This makes it easy because all of the materials are in the file for when you create your next tree, and you have a master file that has the materials for the proxies. To bring them into your new file, simply merge them. If you want to replace your proxies without over writing the old proxy, their are plenty of scripts that will replace objects, and allow you to replace them as instances. It sounds like you are on a good track, and if you take care in what you are doing, it will save you time in the long run.
Logitek
ok, this is what I thought. I just hoped there was an easier way. For Onyx Trees, it is a good idea (like Brian Smith also mentionned in his video tutorial) to create a "bank" scene indeed. That makes totally sense (and it always has... I just never took the time to make THAT scene). But now if I use Vray Proxies with other objects that are specific to one project. Before turning them into a proxy, I have to save them into a separate scene if I want to be able to go back and make changes to them later on, right? This is quite a "heavy" process I think. But I guess it's the only one, right? So basically, I should just live with it and start to apply the rules I know thanks!
