Vray proxy Vs vs max Xref

I think you'll find the scanline renderer is much more limited and wont give you what you're looking for.

Do a google search on Mental Ray placeholder objects. It basically works like vray proxies but not as powerful. You dont really have any control over it. Somewhere in the mental ray render dialog there is an option to turn on placeholder objects. I think its at the top of the last tab (im not at my work pc)

This is really just to help save RAM along with the other options that are listed with it.

I don't do it often, but even with Vray, you can just turn off the GI part of the engine and still render. I don't know how it compare to scanline, but I presume the methods of utilitzing it would be similar. I typically turn off GI when I need to render masks and such for enhancement. I think you can do this Mental Ray, if so, it would probably still use proxies.

crazy homeless guy - it works exactly the same in mentalray, mr without any fg or gi just like scanline only with all the benifits of mentalray. Although the skylight wont work without final gather.

Placeholder objects (in the process tab) basically loads and unloads objects as the buckets need them. If you open the message window you can see what is being loaded as the render progresses.

Wait a couple more weeks for 2009 and you will get proxies ala vray in mentalray.

Wow, thanks guys for all respons. Hmmm, so usually, when we need to render alot of trees, the best way to render it in scanline is by those good old method by asemble 2 planar with tree bitmap on it huh?.. wow vray proxies does a great plug-in...

Why go to scanline when rendering with mentalray? The lighting will be different for a start.

If you use instances of the trees then only the first is processed and the others use that information.

Only use high detail trees close to the camera, mid detail trees for middle ground and planar trees for backround.
