geardaddy1
Does anyone know if you can use copyrighted music on a animation for a client? The problem we are having is that they want 50 copies on a dvd, so we are not sure who will be the final audience. Royality free music is just so cheesy. Thanks. pickle
I think you will have to pay a licensing fee for promotional use even if it is just for the client.
Lester_Masterson
Don't fool yourself. Even Royalty free music has a "fee" associated with it. Check out http://www.freeplaymusic.com or http://www.musicbakery.com They list the fee structure depending on use. /On a side note, from watching DVD commentaries, obtaining rights to use even small snippets of songs can be quite expensive. Seth McFarland (Family Guy) ntoed that the use of a Disney song, and only 9 seconds of it, cost Fox $10000. Mind you this was for broadcast and DVD release later, but beware who may see your video, and make sure you are protected (in writing) // end of 2¢
Matt Sugden
I used to be a professional composer so I know a bit about copyright issues. Anything which enters the public domain has to have PRS performance recording society, or MCPS music copy protection society payments made, if it is copyrighted. Unless of course the volume is turned off!! but with 50 copies floating into the ether, I would be very cautious as you don't know where it will end up, and your ass would be on the line as you would be responsible for copying and distributing the copyrighted material. When my clients want music with an animation, I generally start by using something which is copyrighted which fits as a guide, and see if the client likes it, then I aim to write something original in a very similar style, and do a 'take off' of the music, so there are no real issues about getting the style and mood correct for the anim. This is quite standard practice in a lot of fields where commissioning music is required, there's often a guy saying, can it be a bit of this style matched with a bit of that. I have a great team of guys who can do commissioned music for a very reasonable rate, if anyone is ever interested.
landrvr1
www.flashkit.com There's a soundFX and loop section. Most of the samples are free. Before I started composing my own soundtracks, I'd build them in Premiere (and sometimes a bit in Audition) using tons of great loops and FX from this site. I do a lot in Flash as well, and that's how I stumbled upon the place. Each sample will clearly state whether or not they are free, if you need permission, or if you need pay a fee.
