Stephen Thomas
Hi, finally plucked up the courage to get my hands dirty with the Vray physical camera. Been resisting it for a while due to the large number of variables and my lack of photography knowledge! To be honest though, it's not that scary once you get in there and start experimenting. Used the Sponza Palace atrium model from www.hdri.cgtechniques.com as a base model for test purposes. Added a few things to liven the scene up a bit and tried to find some interesting angles under different lighting conditions. First image setup: HDR Environment light, IES wall lights, Vray light material on net lights. Second image setup: Vray sun/sky daylight system, 1 direct light for slight volume light effect (all objects excluded from illumination). Will upload some more images once I get the chance to play around again. Any comments/questions welcome in the meantime!
alfienoakes
Good work. The vray physical camera and physical sun etc is great. There are so many different effects you can set up, just by changing the variables. The sky colour can be easily tweaked as well, to give different sky intensities.. I think its great..! Like the use of the vray light mat for the net lights.. works well.. Bit of tweaking but very good. second image is good. Would like to see it without the direct light / volume light, and also where it is placed to give the volume effect..
Stephen Thomas
Same view, direct sunlight. Lens filter added in PS.
alfienoakes
So.. Is the second view still using the Vray sun.. or a direct as the sun..? I like the second view in terms of reality.. The shadows are missing in the first one.. The first one looks more like a GI based image. But it has quite a nice volume / fog type effect. But, the missing shadows make it slightly off.. For the volume effect, did you just exclude everything from receiving light in the scene, light from the direct light that is..?
Stephen Thomas
Yeah, just vray sun and sky in the last one. What happened with the first image is I had the sunpath animated so i didn't have to keep going back into setup. Then I set the sun to shine down into the corner with the camera and snapped the direct light onto the sun and target. Except I somehow dialled the sun back to an earlier frame, so it is really just skylight! For the volume light I excluded all objects from illumination but not shadow casting on the target direct light, then picked it from the volume light settings. Kept it subtle because some objects seemed to be more visible through the fog than others and it looked a bit strange.
alfienoakes
Yeah, just vray sun and sky in the last one. You havent posted one like that have you..?
