YOHKOH
Hi Guys We have a problem with our DR at the moment. If we are rendering a big, poly heavy scene it seems that only the better machines we have as slaves will be involved with the render. The others just don't bother making any effort until rendering a smaller scene. I assume it's a RAM issue with the smaller pc's but I thought the idea of DR was to be able to render really big scenes quicker. I've tried proxy and this doesn't make any difference as the poly's are loaded up on render anyway Is there a work around to this? Ta
Tommy L
How long is it taking to load the scene on the quicker machines? Are you getting any render errors? BB notifications? It may be that the faster machines are getting the render finished before the slower ones can load the scene and open max/vray. I am quite sure its not because the older machines are lazy and cant be bothered... (do you mean Distributed rendering or network rendering btw? YOHKOH
I'm referring to Distributed rendering, but it is across a network. The problem is happening when I'm rendering a large image, A1 as well as smaller ones, so the smaller machines should still have time to get involved. When I check the task manager it seems that they are trying to process, and do some work but never get up to a constant 90 - 100% processor usage. They go up and down for a while as, if they are loading the scene and then stop doing anything, not buckets appear on the render either.
Tommy L
BUt you're not getting any error messages anywhere? Not in the Vray dialogue box? The Vray dialogue box should keep you informed of whether the other machines anre logging on and participating. When you go to the DR options in the render panel can it resolve all the machines? YOHKOH
All the pc's are resolved from the setting dialogue box. The vray meeages come up with the following Render host 192.xxxxxx added Scene Transferred to xppc__ Server XXX: Scene loaded starting render. Server XXX: Starting frame 0 Warning: Render host unknown (xxxxxxxx) is not responding Then it continues to do this. Trying to connect, starting then failing. Thablanch
Do you have the 3GB switch installed on the older slaves machines? The scene opened, thied to calculate, reached the limit of the machine, and then stops. it is "normal"
YOHKOH
No 3 gb switch installed as they don't have more than 3gb of ram. Just seems crappy that if I have a big scene with lots of planting I can't DR the render.
Thablanch
3G or not, the switch makes the soft. think you have more... I had the 3gb swithc installed on the 1gb machine, and it did help. as well, samller the buckets, less the memory usage
YOHKOH
Ok Gave that a go. One of the PC's which wasn't working is now. Good stuff The other one isn't though. Goes up to 100% CPU usage for a couple of seconds then gives up.
YOHKOH
Neither work now. Should I even mention the words Mental ray.
Tommy L
Definately a memory issue. Have you tested it with a much simpler scene? If the problem is scene specific that eliminates about a million possibilities.....
YOHKOH
Right. Seems this is solved. I had a material with a displacement map, turned it off. All works fine now!! Thanks for the help guys. BTW if there is a solution to DR rendering displacement maps, that would be useful
