CarlAhearne
Hi guys, Basically, I work in a small team who do CAD work and a bit of Vis work, and we are about to get new computers... We currently work on Dell XPS laptops, as my boss likes to be mobile. I know that workstations are way quicker/more reliable/easily upgradable, but he seems hell bent on staying mobile. I need to convince him that workstation are the only way forward. So, what setup do you guys run and what do you do? I guess we're almost certainly stuck with Dell, but again, I may be able to swing this if I can get a good case together... Also, do loads of you have dedicated render farms, or just a few servers? Cheers guys.
AJLynn
Eh. Notebooks aren't really that bad, especially if they have real ideo cards. For CAD they're usually fine. You can dock it to a larger monitor and a real mouse and not notice the difference. For rendering work, you can add a render node or two and keep your mobility. Something that's not designated a "workstation" but has a Core2 Quad and 4GB RAM, and preferably Windows XP, would be a great value.
