Geoffc
Ok, 2 questions here: It's been a long time since I've had to specify and storefront system in a window schedule. And I can't seem to find any examples on the web. How do you architects out there specify a window system? Do you show each entire unit as one window # then draw an elevation of it, dimensioning where you want the mullions? How do you integrate a door and operable windows? Geoffc
Here's my other main question: I have been working in a small office for the past few years, and when I venture into project types never drawn here, I end up having a bunch of detailing questions with no "old salts" to ask. Questions like the one above. Graphic Standards isn't usually much help. For the life of me I can't seem to find an architectural forum online dedicated to the built process, ie, construction drawings, detailing, etc. I've found a couple great code forums, but most other architectural forums tend to be very artsy school-esque in content. Am I missing an obvious one, or should I start one up now??
BillyElNino
In my previous life as an Architectural Technician we used to show a part plan of the shopfront / window unit in question, elevation above, all fully dimensioned. The window openings are indicated by hatched line from hinge towards the opening direction and door swings on the part plan. This drawing would be fully annotated with all relevant information for that particular unit. In terms of detailling and construction resources we relied heavily on guides / codes and manufacturers details and publications. For traditional detailling we had 'old salts' or construction manuals at hand (or we just made it up and hoped no one actually tried to build it that way!) Also, I wouldn't ask an architect how to do a window schedule!
mskin
typically, an aluminum window system (storefront in this case) consists of everything within the frame peices that attach to the structural surroundings (jambs and sills). I think its as simple as that... . This system may be divided multiple times vertically and horizontally, include operable vents and may or may not include doors. at my current firm, aluminum doors are included in the window schedule elevations because they are provided by the storefront subs, but i have seen them included in the door elevations as well but this doesn't make as much sense to me. they are included in the door schedule but a note is always included to "refer to window schedule" for frames and elevations. take a look at EFCO or Kawneer websites for information (they have details of the components).
