andreg
Hi all, I know this subject will catch peoples interest! Fun apart, I have this client that want a spilled beer printed on his bar tables. So I am trying to render out just what he wants but I'm having a really hard time with the beer and foam. I found some beer and foam texture on the vray materials website but my problem is that I'd like to have a bit of both mixed together. Tried googling images for reference of spilled beer but found nothing. My only other option would be to photograph it but I do want to waste such a precious liquid:D Can anyone help me out on this one? Attached is a render of what I have so far but now I'm stuck. Should I render the beer and foam as one texture or have a mesh for the beer and one for the foam? Thanks in advance for the replies
Horhe
Render out the 2 materials at seperate passes and then combine in PS. Mix it up a bit and erase the bits you dont want. Quicky.
andreg
I suppose that can also be done. But, do you know where I could find a good reference image of a beer spill?
Horhe
Well if you spill a beer the foam will apear immidietally. A couple of secs later if will be gone. The look also depends what surface it was spilled on. What surface do you want your virtual beer to be spilled on?
louis.cho
you can do it in 2 pass but you can also do it with 2 mesh. I tried it with the foam&beer on vray mat.de and I think it's the fastest way to do it. my exemple is not very beautiful but i think if you put more time you should make it right. I used 2 blobmesh object but I think it's should be better with a box with meshsmoot.
demo38
Client wants you to render a beer? What a great job... I assume payment is in beer? If not, you should renegotiate. Back on topic, best reference would be to spill a real beer, but instead, why not buy a six pack, drink 3, spill one on a large white board, photograph it to do the comp you need with your rendered 3d bottle (can't get more real looking than that), then drink the other 2. Seriously, what a great job... Have fun.
Crazy Homeless Guy
Why would you Google this? ....it sounds like a perfect reason have a couple of beers so you can test whatit looks like in real life. ....but, what you have right now is very yellow on my screen. Bud Light would have a very light gold color. Maybe also a less recognizable brand would make things a little more intriguing. But that is just preference. Ernest Burden III
why not buy a six pack, drink 3, spill one on a large white board, photograph it to do the comp you need with your rendered 3d bottle I don't understand why there needs to be a computer model involved. All you need is beer, gravity, a camera and some papertowels. This is a photography assignment.
demo38
Perhaps a good pint of Bastard Stout (a homebrew recipe, lest anyone think I'm addressing them) would do? Mmmmm...
JamesTaylor
just photograph it... it'll take you a 100th of the time to photograph it compared to trying to render it and look a 100 times better! Don't even render the bottle. i agree with Ernest 100%
Frosty
If you're going to use Bud Light, it should look more like urine.
vizwhiz
are you asking for people To contribute Their own efforts? 1st annual CGA spill your beer-on-a-Table render contest ? is There a deadline for This?
andreg
Well thanks for all the replies! I knew beer would catch peoples interest. I finally ended up doing what Ernest said and took pictures while drinking some beer:D Problem with the pictures is that I have a good camera (Canon XTi) but no lighting equipment. So the pictures didn't look so good but I had that reference image I was looking for. I ended up doing the spill in 3D. Here are a couple of renders, C&C are most welcomed as this is not final yet. And yeah I know the color of the beer needs some more fixin in Photoshop.
louis.cho
very good. Is it 2 separated geometry? the color need some change but why in potoshop? it's too yellow, coors light looks like water with very low yello color(and taste like water too!) keep it up
womble
I would definatly have a look at 'Simmsimaging's' post at http://www.chaosgroup.com/forums/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=41209 on the vray forums boards. It's not exactly what you're looking for but it's an absolutely incredible rendering of beer. I guess the chalange here isn't really getting the beer to look absolutely photorealistic, but in making the beer look 'Wow, I need a beer right now' delicious and refreshing, and to achieve that I think you probably need to try simulating a photographic studio environment just a bit more. Just my two pennies.
