PGD
What would you choose? Heres the story, I currently use 3DS max and combustion, but in a mac based office it makes sence to use something more mac friendly. So were looking to switch to Cinema 4D (with vray) for rendering as it'll run on all the macs without duel boot and installing windows etc.. lyca
Hi i don't understand what's your question, but if you are looking for a compositing package on Mac, there are some, first there is the combustion for Mac os x, i used it some years ago but it was not very stable. there is also After Effects and Shake. For 3D, Cinema4D is a good stable piece of soft, but there is also Maya and for Mac.
PGD
You answered my question We have C4D for the 3D part already, it was just compositing I was curious about. Is Final cut a better option to AE?
AJLynn
There are an awful lot of people out there swearing by Final Cut Studio, though it looks like mostly a matter of personal preference / what your people are already good at.
mattclinch
Shake 4.1 gets my vote if you are forced to use a Macintosh...
manta
definitely Shake...its ridiculously priced at $499...they dropped the price from like $4,000, people swear its the best out there...
PGD
Shake looks good, but a little out of our depth to be honest, just comping we need, and basic ones at that. Goes off to look into Final cut studio...
AJLynn
Oops, I had thought Shake was included in Studio Shake is the compositor, I guess the full package would really involve Studio + Shake.

Thats how I understood it anyway, if that is the case we dont need the two. We/I just string the anims together, bits of colour tweeking and the odd layer etc.. At the mo we only have combustion and thats fine for our needs, would shake fill that spot just as well/better?
AJLynn
Final Cut : Premier :: Shake : After Effects If you're looking for an editor to assemble video from clips and do some edits, you've got a ton of options. Final Cut, Studio, maybe even Final Cut Express though IIRC that doesn't do much with color. For my limited needs I actually get away with using iMovie HD, which is nice because it was free The combination of Final Cut and Color looks very useful, and Compressor is a really nice little gadget, like Virtualdub but with more functions and a better interface. Well, anyway, if you're not going to do that sort of high end compositing, then Studio seems like a really appealing option, and if you want to add the higher end capabilities later you could add Shake for not much money. Final cut studio right? All the same thing? Just to clarify What does iMovie HD let you do then? Thats another one to think about Good spot with Shakes new price, it isnt that price on the mac website I'm looking on! (not the main website anyway) Would shake alone do the job? And why has it dropped in price so much, rings a little alarm bells with me anyway
lyca
if you do not already know shake, than don't invest any time on learning it, Apple announced a year ago that they will not continue the development of shake, i think they should announce a new hight-end compositing package at the end of this year or in 2009. shake needs a lot of time to learn, and you really need some very high level theoretical knowledge in compositing, it's same thing as NUKE very hard to learn (http://www.thefoundry.co.uk/features_detail.aspx?ui=CBC2593A-2C9F-4EF9-84BE-C198B0171453) the serious choice is after effects or/and Final Cut studio -Final cut is a movie editing software like Avid (also a nice video editing software, check http://www.avid.com) FCP has all composition function, but with basic fonctionality, but it is aimed to video editing. -After effect, is the absotute compositiong master in video, it's a kind of photoshop for video, but the editing possibility are realy limited. i personaly jump from AE to FCP all the time cause they are complimentary. - Color is a software now include in Final Cut Studio for color correction it's very powerful but does not replace After Effects, same thing for "Apple Motion" -IMovie HD ?? mmmh forget it, it's just a toy for little girls, nothing for professional like you :-)
PGD
Professional... me Reading around the subject it seems its AE we would be better with. Compositing capability over video editing is the goal so it looks about right. Mucho thanks to everyone who replied

lyca
I like AE...but its a toy compared to Shake... yes, it's true, but i thinks it's a waste of time to learn and invest time in a software witch development is stopped, i rather stick with AE and wait to see what Apple will show in a few months to replace shake. Personally i think it is really a shame that Apple bought Nothing-Real (the original developer of shake) just to trash such a good software... this the market law :-(
landrvr1
I like AE...but its a toy compared to Shake... Oof. Don't know about that. On the compositing side, yes. Shake is a killer and widely used by the Pros. On the motion graphics side, AE takes the cake. I'm actually a huge Mac fan these days, and I'm eagerly awaiting the replacement for Shake; which (of course) is rumoured to pack all the best features of AE, Combustion, and Shake into one package. Final Cut Pro is awesome; not unlike Premiere really. I'm a huge fan of Premiere and all things Adobe, but once the Shake replacement comes out I'm going to be giving the Apple suite a very serious look.
