Image Aspect Ratio - Output Size

Hi,

I want to render in portrait format rather than the standard max landscape format.

Up to now i've been getting round this problem by rendering a region and/or cropping in photoshop.

Whenever i change the output proportions in Max the image becomes distorted, and i'm not entirely sure how the Image Aspect ratio works.

Can some one tell me what to do in simple terms please?

Cheers

if you select the option of SHOW SAFE FRAME in the viewport ..then you could change the image aspect ratio to what you prefer and then you can see it in the viewport...

could you show some image where you think it is getting distorted?

expanding on the previous reply, I will assume you have basic knowledge of 3dmax and will include this visual step by step guide I made...

If you need to output at a higher resolution, just enter the numbers in the height and the width will increase automatically.

The important thing to know is, once you have done this, you may have to correct your camera's position in order to make the model fit to the new render output.

Also, the distortion may be so much that you may need to apply a camera correction modifier.

Tell us how this approach works out for you...

If you are getting distorted images you may be changing "Pixel Aspect Ratio" this (as has been stated) should always be set to 1.0, when rendering stills, HD amination, everything these days. The only time to change that number is when you are working with a non-square device, like certain video systems and producing for DVD. Although there are perferable ways of working so that even these circumstances use a par of 1.0.
